Midwest Fleadh Cheoil
Recap of the Weekend by Brian Miller
Eight students from The Center for Irish Music competed in this year's Midwest Fleadh Cheoil, held at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago this past weekend.  This was the second time a contingent of CIM students competed at the fleadh.  A group from the school also competed in 2007 when the fleadh was in St. Louis.  None of the students that went this year were part of the 2007 group, however, so it was a new and exciting experience for all!

The Fleadh is an Irish music competition organized by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (big Irish organization dedicated to the promotion of the music, song, dance, and language of Ireland).  There are solo competitions in all the traditional instruments and singing.  There are also duo and trio competitions and two types of group competitions.  You can learn more on the Midwest Fleadh webpage.

Fiddle students Joey DeGeorgeo, David Ochs, Gabe Dale-Gau, Karen Kenison and Emiliano Morales all competed in solo fiddle competitions; Joey in the Under 12 category, David in Under 15, and Gabe, Karen, and Emiliano in Under 18.  Competitors in the Under 12 and Under 15 categories play two tunes of two different types (one reel and one jig for instance).  Competitors in the Under 18 category play 3 tunes.  All five CIM fiddlers played very well and were up against some very stiff competition from students from all over the country including St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati and Atlanta.

All 5 members of the CIM Advanced Ensemble (Gabe Dale-Gau, Caillean Magee, Fiona McKenna, Emiliano Morales and John Ochs)  competed in the Under 18 category of both the Grúpaí Ceoil and Ceili Band competitions.  Grúpaí Ceoil competitors play a creatively arranged medley of tunes that lasts between 6 and 8 minutes.  Ceili Band groups, in the Under 18 category, play one jig, one hornpipe, polka or march, and a set of two reels.

Impressively, the CIM Ensemble took 2nd in both competitions!  Two very good (and very large- close to 20 in each) groups from St. Louis Irish Arts took 1st ahead of us in each of those competitions.  However, The Center for Irish Music Group was able to beat out the grúpaí ceoil from the Riley School in Cincinnati for 2nd place in Grúpaí Ceoil.  This was quite an accomplishment considering the Riley school is much more experienced with the fleadh than our group, was led by a very talented fiddler who won the Under 18 fiddle title, and had us outnumbered 9 to 5!  The Grúpaí Ceoil medley we put together included two tune arrangements that the group began work on with Jode Dowling back in 2010 and their performance really was the culmination of years of hard work and inspired playing by these devoted students.  Way to go, Advanced Ensemble!

First and second place finishers at the Midwest fleadh qualify to compete at the All-Ireland Fleadh in County Cavan, Ireland this August!  At this point, the group is not sure if making that trip will be possible. But to have qualified in both categories was a fantastic accomplishment!

I'd like to extend a special thank you to all of the parents of the students who competed for making the trip possible.  I would also like to thank teachers Nathan Gourley, and especially Jode Dowling for coming along and being so helpful and encouraging to our brave competitors and families.

Congratulations to all eight 2012 Midwest Fleadh competitors!
