This is not meant to be an exhaustive listing of all of the possible events within the Irish community in the Twin Cities.  For more listings, please visit the IMDA's Event Calendar, which is a great schedule of local events.

This is a valuable learning tool for ALL of our students!  We encourage you to visit this site often.  The site has both slow and fast recordings of some of the most commonly taught songs at CIM.  Along with the recordings is the sheet music for the tune.  Thanks to Brian Miller and Shawn McBurnie for working hard to get this information available to our students!  To access this page, click here.

MARCH 2012

St. Paddy's Day text

Do I dare say that all of us in the Irish music community both look forward to and dread the Saint Patrick's Day season? It's the time of year when anyone can be Irish and for a day and when Irish music is the best music in the world.  (We all know that this is true every day of the year!)

All curmudgeonly thoughts aside however, Saint Paddy's Day is the perfect time to sit back and enjoy all of the music you've learned over the year as you share it with friends and family, even adoring strangers dressed up in shamrock-shaped Guinness hats!  Here is what I encourage you to do at some point this week - take a moment to sing your favorite song for a friend, organize a session, have that first family-band practice you've been talking about or get a babysitter and go out to see a great live concert (Lunasa, anyone?).

This St. Patrick's Day season, there are more opportunities than ever to hear The Center for Irish Music's ensembles performing.  If you've never been to IMDA's events at the Landmark Center on St. Paddy's Day, that is a must go-to event (see CIM listings below).  Follow up with a ceili at The Celtic Junction with music by the Twin Cities Ceili Band, or go home to a quiet session with good friends.

In between gigs with the Two Tap Trio, I am spending this coming weekend finalizing artists for the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend taking place June 14-17th.  So far, we have Harry Bradley (flute & pipes), Felix Dolan (piano) and Jesse Smith (fiddle) booked with one or two more top-notch traditional players and teachers coming right here to Saint Paul.  Mark your calendar and keep checking back to the website to register and buy tickets for the June 16th concert featuring these world-class artists.  You won't want to miss this year's June workshop event.

Last, but most importantly, I would like to take a moment to thank you for your support in making Eigse CIM, A Gaela Event, a massively successful night of music, dance, and fundraising for the CIM.  Special thanks go to Lisa Forrette, our fearless event chair and brain behind CIM's fundraising efforts, to Emily Flagstad for taking on the massive task of the silent auction (and for her unfailing support of the CIM in the form of countless, highly-skilled volunteer hours), and to the CIM board, staff, instructors, volunteers and student ensemble.

Also, thank you to YOU for supporting our fundraiser by donating auction items, WOW raffle items and coming to the event.  We could not do it without our families and students.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day - enjoy the music!

Augusta Scholarship Program

Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia is best known for intensive weeklong workshops that attract several hundred participants annually. Thousands more attend their public concerts, dances, and festivals. Founded in 1982 by Dr. Mick Moloney, Augusta Heritage Center's Irish/Celtic Week is the oldest week of its kind in the United States.  For thirty years, Augusta has consistently attracted the world's finest instructors to immerse students in the very best of Irish craft, folklore, music and dance.  The Augusta Heritage Center has encouraged hundreds of talented artists through its Augusta Scholarship Program. Many have gone on to achieve renown in their chosen fields. Around 75 scholarships are awarded each year to youth and adults who show great promise and cannot otherwise attend. The recipients come from all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. They recommend applying well in advance for scholarships.

Complete scholarship applications will include an Augusta Scholarship Application form, the class registration form, and a letter of recommendation from a non-family artist who is familiar with the applicant and can attest to his or her accomplishments.  For complete details please refer to the Augusta website.  The deadline for scholarships to attend this summer's Augusta Irish/Celtic Week is April 1st.  Late applications will be considered only if funds are available. Scholarship awards do not include housing and meals. Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
