CIM Youth Ensemble Performs at Chicago Celtic Fest
Our own youth ensemble performed at the Chicago Celtic Festival this past weekend alongside youth ensembles from Irish music schools in the midwest. Organized by Kate Dowling's whistle teacher, Noel Rice, the Next Generation Tent featured young Irish music groups from 11-4pm each day in Millennium Park.
Ensemble members rehearse during session at Kieran's: (L to R) Darlene Lerwick, Gabe Dale-Gau, Emiliano Morales, John Ochs, Fiona McKenna, and (behind at piano) Amber Keating
The youth have been practicing hard and are sounding better than ever. We are very proud to have sent them to Chicago as ambassadors for the Center for Irish Music. Norah, Kate and Brian accompanied them there, and Brian backed them up on a few sets. Best wishes go out to our cellist Maia Crews-Erjavec who fractured her wrist and sadly wasn't able to join us on our trip.
We'll let you know how the trip went in the next newsletter! |

Altan Celebrates
25th Anniversary!
Altan performed to a sell-out crowd at the Cedar Cultural Center on March 28, bringing to a close the U.S. portion of their 25th anniversary tour. It was a pleasure, as always, to watch and listen to our own Daithi Sproule, master guitarist and singer, as he shared so many beloved Altan tunes with the audience!

Altan recently released a compilation CD, celebrating 25 years of making great music together. They recorded the CD with the RTE Concert Orchestra in Dublin.

25th Anniversary Celebration, the new CD
Altan is featured in this month's issue of Irish Music Magazine. The issue can be found in our CIM common space...read the full article the next time you visit! |

A new session is taking place every Sunday from 12-2pm, hosted by our own Kate and Jode Dowling, at Kieran's Irish Pub (new Block E location). It takes place in the "Poetry Room", which has a great feel, is family friendly, and will give listeners room for enjoyment. This is an open, standard session (as opposed to a "student" or "slow" session) and everyone is welcome. The new Kieran's serves a delicious Sunday morning brunch, so if you are still building your tune-base, why not come and listen over a cup of coffee and french toast? 600 Hennepin Ave Ste 170 Corner of 6th St & 1st Ave North (formerly Bellanotte), just 1 block East of Target Field.

Hello students and parents,
Summer is fast approaching, and with it arrives an an excuse and opportunity to hone your traditional music skills! I encourage all Center for Irish Music students ages 18 and under to prepare a piece of music for the Twin Cities Feile music competition. Talk to your instructors now about what to bring out for the contest. The music competition is set up much like the national Fleadh and participation will provide you with valuable experience that will serve you well at a larger contest or on a stage. All traditional instrumentalists, singers, or those with a recitation can compete. If you would like to play with your friends you can even enter as a duet or trio! The entrance fee is a mere $10. Further details can be found in the syllabus portion of the Feile website at http://www.twincitiesfeile.com/syllabus.html To sign up for the Twin Cities Feile, you will need to visit Feisworx , create a (free) family account, and follow the directions for registering for the TC Feile music competition. Remember your user name and password as you will want to use them again in September to register for the traditional music competition at the Minnesota Feis! Good luck to all who go!
