Hear Ye, Hear Ye
Open Kitchen makes the Washington Biz Journal
The word is out that Open Kitchen's premier culinary center will be opening soon. We received additional press coverage when our new facility was mentioned in the Friday, April 24, 2009 issue of the Washington Biz Journal . Here is what they had to say:
Kitchens for everyone » Entrepreneurs wanting to start a food-related business, whether it be marketing their own sauces, brownies or jams, often run into a common problem: no commercial kitchen.
Hue-Chan Karels found herself in the same boat when she wanted to set up a cookie business years ago. Along the way, her original dream transitioned into something new.
That something is Open Kitchen, where people can rent kitchen space, take cooking classes, enjoy bistro cooking and even grab a glass of wine at a new wine bar. Open Kitchen, slated to debut this summer, will occupy about 2,000 square feet and an outdoor patio, in Falls Church's West Metro Plaza.(Full Article)
and Northern Virginia Magazine
Even before the sign went up editors from local publications were checking out the concept of Open Kitchen. Northern Virginia Magazine recently interviewed owner, Hue Chan Karels to get the skinny on commercial kitchen rental space and iron chef competitions! Read about it here.

The Making of a Neighborhood Bistro
With our sight set on being that neighborhood bistro where the locals gather for down-to-earth, tasty meals as well as the place to take out-of-town guests for a culinary treat, Open Kitchen has been busy testing recipes and cooking up a storm for a series of tasting events
around the NOVA/Washington DC Metro Area. Our tasters were put to hard work - sampling anywhere between 8 to 10 dishes (paired with wine) at each event and providing critical evaluations about what they liked, didn't like, and suggestions relating to the taste, presentation and pricing aspect of each dish. We are grateful to our "Bistro Guinea Pigs" - you know who you are! We are now back in the kitchen, refining our recipes and designing our lunch and dinner menus that will be changed monthly to reflect the freshest ingredients of each season and the artistry of our chef. So, look for our menus which we will post on our website around July 2009.
Learn to Cook like a Chef...Everyday!
- Cooking Class Schedule Available July 2009.
Open Kitchen has identified a core team of local chefs to work with us to design a delicious series of hands-on and demonstration style cooking classes that will be offered at our new facility. These classes will be for adults and children, as well as for beginners and more advanced cooks. We plan to offer themed cooking classes, such as "Single & Cooking"; world cuisine such as Somali and Indian cooking classes; health and well-being cooking classes, as well as baking classes. Our full schedule of classes will be posted on our website in July 2009. For a truly unique dining experience, Open Kitchen is a place where everyday people could come and roll up their sleeves, cook like a "chef," meet other people who share the same passion, and then savor the fruit of their labor with a glass of wine.
A Kitchen When You Need it! - Taking Applications in June 2009.
Open Kitchen knows how hard it can be to start and operate a food business, particularly meeting local and state food safety laws and regulations. Clients renting our kitchens can be assured that our facilities will be Health Department inspected and permitted for the legal production/assembling of food for immediate consumption such as catering operations and inspected by the Office of Food Safety of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) for the legal production/packaging of food offered for retail sale such as baked goods, condiments, jams and jellies. We're working closely with the Fairfax County Health Department and VDACS to develop a guidance
document to provide a step-by-step list of requirements of what you
will need to operate your food business in a compliance manner." We will have this guidance document, along with our kitchen rental rate structure and an application available for interested food business in June 2009.
We'll also be working with VDACS and other experts to organize informative workshops, such as "How to Start a Food Business", to help food entrepreneurs take their culinary dreams to the marketplace.
