Summer  2010

Helping you live a toxin-free life

He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

Proverbs 10:5

Summertime

AshleyOh, the joys of summer.  Who does not savour the lazy days of  summer?  If for no other reason, it is a break from routines, allowing us to explore our inner feelings, thoughts, look at where we have been, and where we are going in life.  It is here we  begin to forge our paths in new directions for the days when summer heat gives way to the  crispness  of autumn.

However, TODAY  is here and we have each day to live to the fullest.   The days are longer, offering us expansive hours of sunshine.  There are summer showers of raindrops, giving way to the brilliance of rainbows in a sky without boundaries.  If we have been neglectful in  remembering all the blessings around us, surely summer will return them to our hearts.

It is my hope you  find good health, contentment, and  happiness in these days called,  "Summertime."

Like the warmth of the summer sun, I send you my warmest regards,

Pam

Home Remedies for some of the Hazards of Summer

 Bee Stings
Make sure the stinger is out (or remove it with tweezers or your fingers). Clean the area and then make a paste with baking soda and water and slather that onto the sting. This homemade concoction relieves pain and itching.

 Poison Oak Or Poison Ivy
Wash the area with soap as soon as you can, but be sure not to let the oil spread elsewhere. Try patting household bleach onto the area and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing (don't leave it on longer than that!). If a rash develops, try rubbing the inside of a banana peel on the area for an hour each day. Or dry up the rash with rubbing alcohol.

.
Wash the area with soap and water followed by heat or cold on the bite. Try putting a piece of Scotch tape over the bite area or dab it with alcohol, honey or a cotton ball soaked in tea.

Get your skin cooled down as quickly as possible with an ice pack, holding it onto the skin for 10 minutes. Or try a cool compress dipped in a baking soda/cold water mixture and apply for 10 minutes.

Try any of the following: mashed tomatoes and crushed ice, lavender essential oil, luke warm teabags and our favorite: aloe broken off of an aloe plant. Drink a ton of water to rehydrate your body.

Summer is here and you are probably looking for things to do.
 How about biking?

1.  It is healthy ! You'll build your muscles and it is good for your heart.
2.  It doesn't cost anything.  No gas to buy.
3.  When you want to go to a friend's house, you don't have to wait for a ride.
4.  It is better for the environment.
5.  You can ride it to the store.
6.  Parking places are easy to find.
7.  Maybe you can get your family to go on a family ride together.
If you can't ride your bike everywhere, just biking 2 or 3 days a week will make a difference.

This is a great time to bike!

Also,

Now that it's summer, your parents might be looking for a new air conditioner.  Here are some helpful suggestions you can give them:
     Look at "energy efficient" units.
Check with your local electric company to see if they have a rebate for certain models.
Remind your parents to do their research BEFORE they go to the store.
Make sure they get the right size unit for your house; if it's too big, they can end up "overcooling". (I know that sounds weird, but it's a fact!)

                               Have fun this summer,

                                      c  u  nxt   time,

Think chalk is just for teachers and kids? Think again. This sidewalk staple gets high marks as a household
helper.

Lifts Stains
Grease stains and ring around the collar can benefit from some
chalk treatment! Rub a piece of white chalk into the stain and let it soak up the grease for a few minutes. Then, dust off any excess chalk and launder as usual. The chalk dust will get into the fibers and absorb the oils, making the stain easier to wash out.

Absorbs Moisture
Moisture and humidity can cause silver to tarnish. To slow the process, wrap a small bundle of chalk in cheesecloth, tie it off and store it with your silver absorb excess moisture and keep silver from tarnishing. This same method will work in your toolbox to
keep your tools from rusting. (See also: How to Clean Silver)

Stabilizes Screwdrivers
Rub some chalk on the business end of a
screwdriver, and it's less likely to slip as you turn the screw.

Combats Mustiness
Hang a bundle of chalk in your closets and cabinets to keep them from getting damp and musty. The chalk will absorb excess moisture from the air -- humidity that otherwise leads to mustiness.

Perfects Patterns
The next time you need to trace a pattern for a craft project, use the item tailors have used for ages: chalk. The markings will be clear and easy to see, and when you want to erase them, simply dust away the lines.

Repels Ants
To keep ants out of your house, draw chalk lines around your doorways and windowsills. Ants won't cross a chalk line. Why? It's not entirely clear, but some say the ants don't like the particles sticking to their feet, while others say they're averse to the calcium carbonate in the chalk. Whatever the reason, this nontoxic solution will keep ants outside where they belong.

1. Cucumbers

                                        Car Air-conditioning - MUST READ!!

This is not saying DON'T use your air conditioner, but that we should open the windows to let out the harmful fumes (Benzene) prior to turning on the AC.

According to research, the car dashboard, seats, and air freshener, emit Benzene, a cancer-causing toxin.  Also, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure can cause Leukemia. Can also cause miscarriage.
Benzene affects your kidney and liver.. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxin.

Acceptable indoor Benzene level  is 50 mg per sq.ft
A car parked indoors, with windows closed. will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene.
If parked outdoors, under the sun, at a temperature above 60 degrees,  the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level.

People who get into the car, keeping windows closed, inevitably inhale, in quick succession, excessive amounts of the toxin.

Do NOT turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car.

Open the windows after you enter your car and turn ON the AC after a couple of minutes.

Reduce your threat of one of Summer's possible hazards.

Report of progress in our battle against toxins in our daily lives :
In the special Baby and Toxins Report and the March 2009 Newsletter, I discussed
this toxin with you..........

 President Obama Signs Toxin-Related Bill

President Obama recently signed a law aimed at reining in  health menace -- formaldehyde in wood often used in sofas, cabinets and other home furnishings. The president's move came after the World Health Organization determined that formaldehyde, which is often used in wood for furniture, is carcinogenic, and the Environmental Protection Agency advised that overexposure to the chemical complicates breathing, irritates the eyes, and causes nausea.

The negative publicity surrounding formaldehyde has increased consumer Interest in furniture that is formaldehyde-free -- and usually more expensive. The Origins brand has boosted sales in the last month. Furnishings giant Home Depot carries another line called Young Furniture that does not contain formaldehyde
