Salt Water
or
Fresh Water
Novel bacterial strains capable of neutralizing toxins produced by blue-green algae have been identified by researchers.
Blooms of blue green algae (cyanobacteria) are found in both fresh and salt water, ingested by animals and humans by drinking, swimming or bathing in contaminated water. In the body the toxins attack liver cells causing acute and chronic poisoning.
Conventional methods for water treatment do not remove microcystins.
Costs of advanced water purification strategies are beyond most of the world's population. Using bacteria to remove microcystins from water provides a reliable, cost-effective purification system, which does not involve any use of harmful chemicals or any other substances harmful to the environment.

Researchers
have discovered bacteria growing within the parts of showerheads.
To a person with a healthy immune system, this would not pose a danger,
but to someone with compromised immune system,
it could prove to be dangerous.
The metal heads are less likely to allow the microbes to adhere .
However, there are parts where the bacteria can continue to grow in the connections.
It is recommended to clean the shower head
as often as possible.
Once a week is
preferred.

Awesome Autumn
Greetings
This is a picture, taken a couple of years ago, at the lake I am blessed to view from my home. It seemed appropriate to share this with you in our newsletter about water........
Ah, the cool refreshing days of Autumn are upon us. The same words are used to describe the feelings we associate with water --- cool and refreshing. Life needs cycles of the seasons and we cannot live without fulfilling our needs for water.
When I realized how serious the toxins in the plastic water bottles are for our health, I felt compelled to write an article for the newsletter.
I began to recall there are numerous references to water in the Bible, often meaning life itself. In researching the number of times it is mentioned, I found it varies with the translation, but may be 373 to 600+ times. Obviously, the importance of water is reinforced through the scriptures. Therefore, I felt it is also a reminder to us of the depth of our actions as well as personal relationships in life.
Are we giving attention to the vital areas, or do we take them for granted? Whether a spoken word of encouragement, a deed which touches someone else's life, or building blocks to what is meant to be, but, yet to be, ---do we need to irrigate and water streams which may be drying up when they should be flowing?
Perhaps, the refreshing thoughts of cleansing through water, is a time to cleanse and refresh other areas as well. Enjoy these quieter days before the holiday season begins. These are treasured times to reflect, and project.
Seek where there is thirst for water in your life. Allow it to refresh and nourish your soul. Remember, even tears water the soul, then bring rainbows.
Fountains of blessings,

Water on the Go
In recent years we have heard that the plastic water bottles we see in everyone's hand, the ones you will not leave home without, goes everywhere with you, and on and on, may be dangerous to your health. Studies have shown convincing reasons for concerns from the plastic, ranging from causing cancer, neurological diseases, hormonal disturbances in men and women, breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, and toxins which endanger the developmental stages
of unborn babies.
Of particular interest are the toxins leached from plastic
bottles when warmed to degrees such as the temperature of a locked, parked car.
To check your current bottle, few consumers know there is actually a key for you:
The number in the triangle on the bottom of your plastic water bottle means something.......
It tells you what type of material/plastic was used in making the bottle.
Numbers 3,6, or 7 are the most common, but less safe.
AVOID THESE NUMBERS.
Numbers 1, 2, 4, or 5 are considered the safer numbers
for selecting your water bottle. Bottles with a No. 1
are safe, but it is recommended washing with soap and water for re-use.
I would like to make a comment about the advice
to wash plastic drinking bottles. Personally, I would
use a productin place of soap. Perhaps just a pinch of baking soda added to water for rinsing out the
bottle. However, to guard against bacteria, fungus,
or other concerns, try a drop of grapefruit seed oil,
or some lemon juice added to the rinse water -- in
place of soap. Unless you are using a safe soap, I
have concerns about soap residue left in your bottle.
There are metal bottles which are designed to be
re-used, but there is still more to consider when
purchasing these bottles as well. Make sure you
are not trading one set of problems for another.
Aluminum has been shown to cause neurological
symptoms and disorders, in addition to cancers.
Remember the term, lead poisoning.
Stainless steel seems to be the safest choice.
It doesn't leach chemicals. I know it is a little more expensive, but it is durable and the bottles can be
used for years. The initial investment should
compensate for the cost of buying bottles on a regular basis. One bottle may equal the cost
of a case or pack of plastic water bottles.
However, you will not need as many, and they
will be re-used.
Tips for your Stainless Steel bottle:
These bottles are not for hot liquids, only cold !
Wash by hand. Do not submerge or soak in water.
Do not place in the dishwasher.
Do NOT use chlorine to clean or soak.
Always make sure the lid is on tight before use.
Another point to consider:
If you are interested enough to research your water
bottle, you are probably interested enough to know
the qualityof your water source. When buying a
bottled water, keep in mind, you cannot be sure of
the water source, in addition to the fact that those
bottles have been stored and shipped for months, ---
even as long as 2 years, in some cases, leaving time
for bacteria in the water to multiply. Think of the
extreme temperature exposures, all the handling,
which countries of origin and travel (?), and what
regulations were (or were not) in place(?), etc.
TIP
To cut down on the use of bottles, try to develop
the habit of using a glass at home, then taking the bottle with you as you leave.
As to where to purchase these bottles, the sources
are numerous. A search on the web will give you a
full range of choices. Stores where home products
are sold, such as Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Your
favorite grocery market, health food store, or organic supplier should offer some options for you. Many catalogs offer water bottles.
And a last word........
If you still want a re-usable plastic bottle, there are some newer, safer plastics available. But I suggest:
Be sure to read the label, making certain they are
BPA free and/or approved by Federal regulations.
(This claim will not be required on stainless steel)

Is Mold in your washing machine? |
|
|
There have been reports of mold developing around the gasket of washing machines, particularly front-
loading washers. The odor can be transferred to the clothes, as well as the washer and laundry area. Look for obvious signs of mold around the gasket. If you detect an odor, consider treating your washer, even if mold is not visible.
If mold is found, (or suspected) there is a new product, Affresh Washer Cleaning Kit, which can be purchased from Whirlpool Corporation. The kit includes tablets, used in the washer for odor-causing residue, iron, and lime scale to clean where you can't reach.
Also included are Grit-Grabber cloths* to break up residue on the rubber door seal, lock it in, and wipe away from where you can reach.
These kits can be used on any brand washer.
*Always wear protective gloves when working around mold. Without the protection, at the very least you could develop fingernail fungus.

Cinnamon -- the Spice of Fall
Can you imagine fall treats without Cinnamon?
Apple cider, spiced apples, the aroma of cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes, breads, or apple pie baking -- all reminders of this time of the year and they include cinnamon.
*It is the most common spice used in the United States.
*Realtors often place a pan of cinnamon and water in
a warm oven for open houses to appeal to the senses
of potential buyers.
*Studies show, when testing an array of fragrances and aromas, it is the scent most appealing to men.
*Cinnamon originally comes from the barks of evergreen trees located in Sri Lanka.
*There are two different varieties of cinnamons: Ceylon is the fragrant spiral stick we use to spice our beverages, and Cassia is the ground spice with which we bake.
*Cinnamon boasts a number of medicinal purposes.
--It aids digestion, lowers cholesterol, helps promote circulation, and helps limit the amount of insulin needed for people with Diabetes II.
--It can be used as an astringent, antibacterial or anti-fungal.
--Antiseptically it is used for brushing teeth, to prevent gum disease and overall mouth hygiene.
--The spiral cinnamon sticks can be used as an aid when quitting smoking.
--When used for physical ailments capsules are available or ground cinnamon is added to a liquid. An oil is also available. The oil is used for aromatherapy and not to be taken orally or used on our bodies.
Enjoy the season and enjoy the aroma of Fall.
Cinnamon --- a natural gift. Enjoy the benefits.

Even if I make small changes concerning toxins in my life,
does it make a difference?
The basic idea of safety testing chemicals is that anything can kill you in high doses. The goal is to find safe levels. New research suggests that some chemicals may be more dangerous than previously believed at low levels.
Looking at one compound at a time, we may miss the boat. BPA, a primary component of some plastics, reacts with other cells and could be reacting in the bloodstream to produce heart disease, diabetes or liver failure. Such effects have been observed in animal studies. There may be no safe dose of certain compounds.
The following are showing up more and more in research.....
Early pubescence in girls (BPA hastens the onset of pubescence in juvenile rats); asthma (car and truck exhaust can induce or worsen lung inflammation), and genital malformation (phthalates have been linked to lower sperm count in rats). The rise in autism is also believed by some to be at least partially linked to an environmental cause.
Yes, small changes can make a difference. You never know when that small
change is a big one in YOUR life. Switching from the toxic plastic water bottles is one such change.
