It seems appropriate, to welcome a new school year with an apple,long considered a token of appreciation for the teacher. This newsletter was influenced by the new beginnings of the school year filled with the promise of experiences, thoughts, learning, and visions.
Ah, the joys of a new school year---- riding the bus, traveling to the promise of adventures in a new day, the coveted time for recess on the school ground, cake for classroom celebrations, and stops at McDonald's for a quick bite to eat with friends.
Unfortunately, in today's world these joys may carry toxins, which you will read about in this newsletter. All the more reason to plant the seeds of awareness in your world and to remember, small changes may bring about a healthier life. That same apple which carries thoughts of love and gratitude also embodies better health.
The opening quote emphasizes we never know what one seed can do. Just making a small change may evolve into a lifestyle change. One seed! Just think what many seeds of change can do. Fall brings a sense of closures, but new beginnings too. Greet each one with renewed determination, strength, and always ------- optimistic enthusiasm.
With my warmest and healthiest thoughts,
Pam

Cheers!
McDonald's
Cutting Potato Pesticides
McDonald's Corp, the largest purchaser of potatoes in the United States, has agreed to take preliminary steps to reduce pesticide use in its domestic potatosupply.
Because McDonald's has a commanding presence in the marketplace, this commitment offers the promise of significant reductions of pesticide use -- which will benefit consumer health, as well as farm workers, local agricultural communities and environment,

Caution
School Buses
Diesel exhaust contains more than 40 cancer-causing substances.
Increases respiratory
problems as well
A study has
shown that children riding a diesel school bus for 13 years of
school have
increased rates of
cancer.
If your school
district has older buses,
you may want to push for safer practices ,
such as a "no
idling"
regulation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ While we are on
the topic of school,
remember, there are many allergens
in a school. Cleaning products,
full spectrum of chemicals, a breeding ground for molds, glues, and almost anything else that fills a child's day in school. Be very
aware if your
child begins to exhibit signs of
adverse reactions.
Some Symptoms:
Headache
Stomach Ache
Rash
Extreme Fatigue
Sleepiness
Change in mood
Change in behavior
Learning
Disabilities
All of this may be a
sign of an adverse
reaction. The beginning of the
year is a good time
to monitor these
changes. Again,
be aware. |
New Light bulbs have safety issues
How safe are the popular new fluorescent light bulbs?
Are they really environmentally friendly?
The new bulbs outlast the traditional bulbs 10-to-1, but they contain potential dangers mercury can pose.
If a CFL bulb does break, the EPA has safey guidelines for cleanup::
*Have all people and pets leave the room.
*Open the window. Vacate the room for 15 minutes or more.
*Shut off the central heating and air conditioning system. *Do not use a broom or a vacuum; instead find cardboard or stiff paper to sweep up the bulb and duct tape to pick up the mercury fragments.
*Carefully place them in a glass jar with a metal lid that's readily available."
The reason for the precautions: Mercury is a neurotoxin that can cause neurological problems if it reaches the developing brain of a young child or a fetus..
Dispose of as a Hazardous Material to avoid the spread
of mercury into our ground and waterways.
Officials are working on a plan to allow more convenient
recycling of the bulbs.
Icing on cakes --- a health risk?
A recent report indicates supermarket cakes are chock-full of additives linked to hyperactivity in children and ingredients found to cause cancer and asthma.
A large number of these cakes, contained more than 20 additives.
One in five cakes contained the antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA, 320), which some studies suggest may cause cancer.
One in four of the cakes, the preservative sulphur dioxide (220) or sodium metabisulphite (223) was present, which can trigger asthma attacks.
Price was found to be no indicator of quality.
What are your options or alternatives?
Purchase cakes which are not decorated or frosted.
Do it yourself so you know what you are using.
Check with your bakery. Ask about custom orders.
Consider an ice cream cake, popcourn balls
stacked cleverly, or other alternatives.
Know what you are buying. Read the label for ingredients.
Toxic Alert  Pesticides blamed for some childhood brain cancers. Little is known conclusively about what causes brain cancer in children, but research studies are consistently finding links to prebirth pesticide exposure. Environmental Health News
http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/newscience/pesticides-linked-to-child-brain-cancer/
[See related articles about links between the substances sprayed on fields and human reproductive health issues:
I cannot say enough against pesticides. The dangers associated with them came to my attention when Ken and I were being treated for our toxic mold exposure in an Environmental Health Center in Dallas, Texas. At least 50% of the patients I met were extremely ill due to pesticides. The other 50% were ill due to a mulititde of other exposures. In my home, I use TKO Orange*, listed on my web site Resource Page.
$$$ More uses for *TKO Orange: Household cleaner, can be used in the dishwasher, clean countertops, cutting boards and flooring, laundry detergent, spot treatment, carpet cleaner, so safe I rinse my hair with it, and pet owners love it --- not only for cleanups, but pet grooming as well.
Due to my personal research on this subject, I am convinced we have discovered only a small portion of the problems associated with toxic pesticides. Be aware: Danger Ahead!
Toxic Information
Cost Savings
Regularly appearing in the news
are reports that organic food is no healthier for you than non-organic food........ to one extent I agree.
It is true --- an apple is an apple, ...........
But, if an apple tree has been treated with pesticides, weed killers, fertilizers, then "nourished" fruit it bears, which is treated with chemicals for pest control, color enhancement, chemicals or wax to create a sheen, and was irrigated, watered and rinsed using non-purified or uncontrolled standards for water source ---- are you sure you want to eat fruit of that tree?
This is just one example when "certified organic" regulations make the differenece.
P.S. *I would like to add a cost saving tip. Larger market chains carry their own line of "certified organic". You can save up to 50% of the upgraded organic costs, by purchasing these brands. "Certified Organic" has to follow strict guidelines, regardless of the brand name. The larger chains are usually more competitive in pricing. |
Remember the first mailing you received from this site concerning toxins in your daily life?......... (Take off your shoes when you walk in the door)
The New York Daily News sent two reporters around NYC wearing $3.50 flip-flops for four days.
They hit bars and a baseball game. They rode the train. They dared to enter a public restroom at the Coney Island subway station. The rubber sandals were then sent to a lab and found to be riddled with nasty and potentially deadly germs.
Analysts found Staphylococcus aureus -- a bacteria that can kill you if left untreated. "If you wear shoes for three months, 93 percent have fecal bacteria and 20 percent have E. coli," according to Dr. Charles P. Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona.
Keep those "house shoes" by the door. Change as soon as you walk inside. Keep the bacteria and other contaminants outside |
