You requested this......

Last month after  the discussion on
flouride, you asked for a recommendation
of a flouride-free toothpaste.
There are several brands on  shelves of stores where health products are sold, but my personal choice is

TOM'S
Natural Care
of Maine
 However,
be sure to read the packaging because this company also makes products with flouride.
Always read your labels.
HeadshotApril, the month bathed in the abundance of Spring!

If there is a month which celebrates youth, this is it!   A time of starting over, renewals, and promises that our
hopes will be fulfilled.

The perfect time to adopt better health habits.  Information in this newsletter runs from the old to the new.  It will remind us of cleaning products proven non-toxic thousands of years ago, then bring us to safe practices for the latest of today's technology.   An appropriate time to glory in the strength of age, while celebrating the newness life has to offer.  The Master's plan at work.

Yes, no doubt, the Lord created Spring to remind us
there is always hope and there will be newness in life bringing changes and opportunities.  It is my hope that you have now seen reality of  possibilities we spoke about in January.  But --- why stop there?
Let's continue to seek and dwell in new possibilities!

Enjoy a happy, healthy April,

Labels and Toxins

Last month I began listing names you will recognize on labels.   These are toxins you will need to know by name and avoid them when possible.  Now to add to the listing......

 DIOXINS
Most likely you will not see this on a label, but my purpose is to make you
aware of the toxin and where it is found in everyday life.

How might I be exposed to dioxins?
Because dioxins are so widespread, everyone has some level of dioxins in their bodies. You can be exposed to small amounts of dioxins through the food you eat, especially animal products, fats, and fish. You can be exposed through the air you breathe and the water you drink. Handling pesticides and herbicides, burning wood or trash, smoking cigarettes, and breathing automobile exhaust may also expose you to dioxins.

Nursing infants can be exposed to dioxins through breast milk, cow's milk, and infant formula. Fetuses can be exposed through the pregnant woman's placenta.

TCDD dioxin is "known to be a human carcinogen" because it causes cancer, particularly lung cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Exposure to high levels of dioxins can cause reproductive and development problems, suppression of the immune system, increased heart disease and diabetes, changes in hormonal levels, liver damage, and abnormalities of the pancreas, circulatory, and respiratory systems.

Exposure to low levels of TCDD can cause dermatitis, gastrointestinal problems, and excessive body hair.

Exposure to low levels of all dioxins can cause a burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and throat; headache; dizziness; fatigue; blurred vision; urinary tract disorders; muscle and joint pain; impaired muscle coordination; nausea; and vomiting.

 Electromagnetic Fields

Quote from the EPA concerning EMF.

"I have never seen a set of epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence we are seeing with extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields. Clearly there is something here." - Martin Halper, The Environmental Protection Agency, Director of Analysis and Support.
Text Information from Nirvana Safe Haven

"It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestors and smoking and directily concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children."   Danielle Cronin, Health Reporter

".....heavy users of mobile phones...2,000 hours or more in their life, had a 240 percent increased risk for a malignant tumor on the side of the head the phone is used."  Reuters

"Long-term use of a cell phone may cause inner ear damage and can lead to high frequency hearing loss, according to a new study."
Research presented by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation's Annual Meeting in Washington D.C.

These are a few quotes relating to the concern of cell phone usage.  Devices such as cell phones, cordless phones, iPods, PDA's,  Bluetooth, and the list goes on, while convenient, appear to pose health dangers as well.   The term is Electropollution, referring to the Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) and Frequencies (EMF) emitted from these devices.

A report by Spanish scientists discovered--- a cell phone call lasting
2 minutes, can alter the natural electrical activity of a child's brain for up to one hour afterwards.   However, the concerns reach beyond the above-mentioned devices to the microwave oven, television screens, clock radios at bedside, baby monitors (same frequency as a microwave), and computer monitors.

What can you do?

There are products which are designed to strengthen resilience to the effects of the stress from these devices and appliances.   A small
chip can be secured on cell phones, PDA's or Bluetooth, another chip
can be placed on the computer monitor frame, and there are pendants which can be worn while away from home  as your body fights on a battlefield of assailants in our technological world.  In addtion to these products, there is a hand-held detector you can purchase to test products throughout your house from time to time, allowing you to determine the areas of the highest electro-toxins.  Perhaps you could share the purchase cost of the detector with family or friends.  An investment in your health.

In the News........

You may have heard about legislation concerning organic gardening and farming........

My research shows this to be legislation to protect consumers from mislabeling of foods as organic, when in truth they are not.
It does not appear to be wording which will forbid individual, home
organic gardening .

Using a Natural Cleaner Instead of Harsh Chemicals

Vinegar is a natural cleaner that has been around as far back as 3000 B.C.  It can be used for a multiude of tasks.

You can use it for beauty--- a final rinse of water-diluted-vinegar for your hair will leave it clean and shinning.  One gallon of water with
1/2 to 1 cup of vinegar.  Pour through hair, then rinse.

For better health, vinegar can be used to cleanse your system and basically disinfect your body.

One of the most common uses of vinegar is for cleaning. Vinegar is a natural antibacterial and a powerful cleaning agent. Using vinegar instead of other products that contain harsh chemicals can be a giant step toward improvement for the health of your family. Why expose yourself and your family to harsh chemicals contained in cleaning products when you have an alternative that works as well or better?

An advantage to using vinegar is that it is a natural substance, safer and better than other cleaners that contain cancer causing agents and harmful toxins. Another advantage is that it is less expensive than commercial cleaners and readily available.

Here are some ways you can use vinegar in your household cleaning routine:

Window cleaning: Mix with water or use full strength to clean windows, glass and mirrors. Dry with crumpled newspaper to get a fresh streak free shine every time. It removes water spots and dirt from indoors and outside.

It is safe on your no-wax vinyl, wood and tile floors. It removes dirt and build-up while leaving the floor looking clean and shiny. Add a ½ cup of vinegar to 1 gallon of water and mop. You can also use for quick clean-ups.

Dishes/dishwasher: Use vinegar in your dishwasher to remove build-up from the dishwashing detergent or use it as a rinse aid to leave your dishes streak-free. Run a cup of vinegar through a full dishwashing cycle once a month to clean and deodorize your dishwasher. Use it in the sink in hot water with dish soap to remove soap build-up and water deposits from glassware.

Oven Cleaner: Use vinegar as a final rinse when you are cleaning your oven with the harsh alkali cleaners.  Wipe the entire oven with vinegar to remove the chemical build-up and to freshen and polish the inside of the oven after a deep cleaning. It can also be used on self-cleaning ovens.

It can dissolve mineral deposits from glass coffee makers, and other smooth surfaces. For most uses, dilute with water.

Washing Walls: Vinegar can remove harsh stains off walls. It can remove nicotine stains if you have smokers or pen and crayon from little ones. Use vinegar just to wipe down your walls for normal washing.  It absorbs odors and cleans the walls without striping the paint. Vinegar is a natural neutralizer so it will freshen the air and leave your house smelling clean.

Pet Accidents and Odors: Vinegar can be used to clean up after pets and to sanitize areas of the house where pets have had accidents. Pour half vinegar and half warm water directly on the area, scrub with a scrub brush and soak up excess water with a wet sponge or towel. For an added boost spray with hydrogen peroxide and let dry. (I don't advise soaking a spot on
carpeting and padding, only hard surfaces)

You can remove dust from a lamp using malt vinegar diluted on a cleaning cloth.

Vinegar is an excellent solvent for cleaning epoxy resin and hardener, even after the epoxy has begun to harden.
.
Grime can be safely removed from copper pots by using salt and vinegar.

Get a clean, germ-free shower head by soaking it in vinegar to remove all of the mineral deposit and soap scum build-up.

Vinegar can be used as an herbicide. Acetic acid is not absorbed into root systems, so vinegar will kill top growth, allowing perennial plants to reshoot.

There are different kinds of vinegars available and some work better than others for certain chores. The types of vinegar that work best for house cleaning are distilled white vinegar, malt vinegar and apple cider vinegar. If you can protect your family's health, use a natural cleaner that actually works, and keep your house looking and smelling clean, why not use it?

One more tip: Purchase vinegar
by the gallon for cost savings.
