Bilodeau delivers moguls gold on home snow

WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. - The drought is done.

One night after Jennifer Heil's oh-so-close silver effort, Canada's moguls team delivered gold Sunday at Cypress, with Alexandre Bilodeau seizing the Olympic title in the men's moguls competition. The victory marks Canada's first-ever gold at a home Olympics.

Heil mines silver to kick-start Canuck effort

WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. - Jennifer Heil came close to delivering Canada's first-ever Olympic gold on Canadian snow but had to settle for the silver medal after a conservative final run and a hard-charging performance by American Hannah Kearney.

Downhill racers get green light Monday

hudec_pmWHISTLER, B.C. - Sunshine and blue skies gave a shot of optimism to weather-weary Olympic Games ski race organizers on Sunday. Heavy rain and snow in the morning forced the International Ski Federation to cancel a women's downhill training. But the clouds broke up during the afternoon and officials were confident the men's downhill would be good to go Monday.

"It's going to be rough and tough," said Switzerland's Didier Cuche, who at 35 hopes to become the oldest man to win a skiing gold medal. "If it is frozen, it is going to be really nice."

Cuche and Australia's Michael Walchhofer are among the prerace favourites. But Walchhofer said not to count out Manny Osborne-Paradis of Invermere, B.C., or Robbie Dixon of Whistler.

Canada's Renner to focus on sprint races
renner

Sara Renner is ready to embrace the lung-busting cross-country sprints that once again seem to be her strength.

The veteran Canadian cross-country skier will skip Monday's 10-kilometre cross-country race to focus on reaching the podium in the midweek classic sprint races.

The 33-year-old silver medallist from the 2006 Olympics helped lift spirits of the Canadian team last Sunday with a surprise bronze medal finish in the 1.4-kilometre classic sprint in the World Cup in Canmore, Alta.

That success is playing in her decision to focus on sprinting this week, as she aims to repeat her feat.

"I'm really excited about the sprint. I had such a great time in Canmore,'' she said.

Renner explained the shift in plans during a team news conference, where she was joined by 10 upbeat teammates in their final news conference before competitions begin Monday.
