Murray 4th in season-opening Italy stop

Canadian ski cross racer Ashleigh McIvor officially secured her spot in the Vancouver Olympics after finishing fifth in a World Cup event Tuesday.

The native of Whistler, B.C., had already provisionally qualified for the Games in February but still needed to make the quarterfinals in at least two World Cups to guarantee the berth. She accomplished that with Tuesday's result and a second-place finish Monday in the season-opening race.

"It's nice knowing that I have an Olympic spot," McIvor said during a conference call. "I officially secured that today."

Anna Holmlund of Sweden captured gold for the second straight day, while Ophelie David of France took silver and Sanna Luedi of Switzerland was third. Julia Murray of Whistler finished fourth.

Preparation makes Britt Janyk a race-day factor

The fastest path down the mountain is the key to winning any alpine ski race.

Finding the proper line, making the tightest turn, executing the proper jumps and knowing when to tuck can mean the slim margin between standing on the podium and walking out of the finish area carrying your skis on your shoulder.

Britt Janyk has learned some of those precious hundredths of a second can be shaved off a run even before she slides into the start gate. Sometimes it's the preparation that makes the difference in the result.

McKeever advances Olympic, Paralympic bid

mckeeversCanada's Brian McKeever has done his part and is ready for an opportunity to hit the start line at Whistler Olympic Park in February and ski into the history books as the first athlete to compete at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The 30-year-old McKeever won the men's 50-kilometre Haywood Nor-Am individual-start classic ski race in convincing fashion Tuesday, boosting his chances of securing a spot on Canada's Olympic Cross-Country Ski Team. The event was also being used as one of four Olympic Trials by Cross Country Canada.

"That is all I had today and I hope it is enough to convince the selection committee that I deserve a spot on the Olympic team," said McKeever. "I feel satisfaction right now. This race is tough enough as it is, and I am just relieved to be able to put everything together and put it all into the race because I knew I didn't have a second chance. I am very happy."
