Another World Cup season has come and gone. Wow, that was fast. Seems like yesterday that we all blew our picks for the first downhill of the season at Lake Louise. Vonn and Svindal were the big stories on the alpine side. Svindal's climb back to the World Cup top spot was beyond impressive considering his leg was a mangled mess just over one year ago. Few thought his return would be this swift. American Lindsey Vonn was sublime this season, dominating the women's Tour with such conviction that the overall - and discipline - races were over months ago.
The Canadian alpiners were solid in 08-09, especially the men's team. The speed team has become a main stay in the top ranks and you just have the think there's more in the tank for this young team who are getting much better each year. The Speed Queens, however, fell off the mark this season, losing the swagger they had one year ago and finishing well into the teens most weekends. Canada's para-alpine team made history by winning the overall Nations Cup for the first time. On the para-nordic side, Brian McKeever blew the competition out of the water at the World Cup competition at Callaghan Valley in early-March. The Canadian ski cross team became a dominant force this season with seven different racers claiming World Cup medals during the season, including the five-of-six medal performance on the Olympic track in Cypress in February. The Canadian snowboard team enjoyed the resurrection of Jasey-Jay Anderson's career and the continued march to the top with youngster Matt Morison. And young Alex Harvey continues to turn heads with his surge through the ranks, finishing third in a 50 km event in Norway, hanging tough with the Scandinavian veterans 10 years his senior. All in all, a stellar year on the slopes for the Canucks. --- SRC Editors
