The New Canadian Attitude
Yes, we Canadians are likable, pleasant and all-around nice people. But in the black and white world of amateur sports nice means nothing, except perhaps being a more likable loser.
But now we see the new Canadian emerging on the slopes. Nice, yes, but more confident, sure and purposeful.
Sara Renner, who finished 9th last week in the 10-kilometre classic at the cross country worlds in Czech Republic, expressed disappointment with the rare top-10 finish. "I really felt like I could have been in the fight for the medals today," said Renner. "I have set my standards pretty high. I know I really should be easier on myself, but I also know that I can be a medal contender."
Then there's Alexandre Bilodeau, perhaps the best Canuck moguls skier since Jean-Luc Brassard, who credits an attitude adjustment for his career turnaround after wrapping up his first WC title on Saturday.
Expectations were loaded on the Quebec skier when he burst onto the moguls scene in 2006 becoming the youngest winner ever on the WC when he took gold in Mont Gabriel, Quebec. He was touted as a gold-medal threat going into the 2006 Torino Games but was overwhelmed by the experience.
Now, the 21-year-old is focused on the moment and has become Canada's hottest skier on the road to 2010. I guess it doesn't hurt that he has possibly the best team in history right behind him. The men's moguls team has swept two World Cup podiums this season and appear to be just getting going ...
