The good news is that it wasn't too long ago that Canadians got excited by three skiers finishing in the top 15. The bad news is that today, you're not too excited about three athletes in the top 15.

It's a sign of the times of raised expectations. There are a lot of positives from today's opening World Cup women's speed event in Lake Louise, the bar has been raised and Canadian ski fans want/expect podiums.

Meanwhile, down in Beaver Creek, Erik Guay has shaken a giant monkey off his back with a third place finish on the famed Birds of Prey downhill and Aksel Lund Svindal wrestled a gorilla off his back on a course that ended his season one year ago.

It is shaping up to be an interesting pre-Olympic season.

LAKE LOUISE: USA's Vonn wins again

 

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta - American Lindsey Vonn stayed red-hot, winning the Lake Louise Bombardier Winterstart women's World Cup downhill Friday in a time of one minute, 26.10 seconds, with Italy's Nadia Fanchini second, 0.61 back. Germany's Maria Riesch rounded out the podium in third, 0.69 back. Three Canadians finished in the top 15.
