 An Unscripted Conversation about Music, Identity, and Religion

Yitz Jordan (Y-Love) is an award-winning inspirational hip-hop artist whose compelling personality and multilingual musical talents have received worldwide acclaim from New York to Ukraine. An Orthodox Jew for nine years, Yitz's unique perspectives on Jewish identity and cross-cultural relations have captivated minds at schools, theatres, and various houses of worship worldwide. His unique musical style, blending holy tongues such as ancient Aramaic and Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish and Latin over ethnic and futuristic urban beats, was called the "soundtrack to social progression" by URB Magazine, and XXL Magazine said that Y-Love "is making hip-hop kosher."

-- Community Clothing Drive for NCJW Aviva, a group of young Jewish women in sororities who are committed to Jewish values and community service, is sponsoring a drive for the Kids Community Closet, run by the National Council of Jewish Women. Kids Community Closet delivers new clothing directly to hundreds of students each year. As determined by a teacher, administrator or social worker, children in crisis or emergency situations receive as needed clothing, outerwear, underwear and socks. Anyone can participate in this drive by contributing through the online registry. This allows you to go online from anywhere and purchase items to be shipped free of charge. Later this semester, Aviva and the National Council of Jewish Women will present all of the clothing to the schools. Please follow these instructions to participate in the drive: 1) Click on the link: Kids Community Closet Registry. 2) Shop around the registry to find items that you'd like to purchase. 3) Once you've added all of your items to your shopping bag, click on "shopping bag" at top right. 4) During the checkout process, select "ship to store" and follow the prompts until you get to the list of stores in the St. Louis Area. 5) Select the second store - West County. 6) Continue with the online instructions. |

-- The Hows and Whys of What We Do: Jewish Life Deconstructed
For all of these years I never knew why Jews have the custom of putting salt on challah at Shabbat dinner, what the significance is of the choreography of the prayer service or why we put a mezuzah on our doors. Join this guided discussion to uncover and understand the significance of the whats and whys of being Jewish. We will meet on Mondays at 6:00pm in the DUC Millstone Lounge (entrance near Forsyth).

-- The Amir Project is in need of Lead Farmers for this summer! Amir is an organization that utilizes experiential environmental education to ignite the intellectual, social, and emotional development of youth. Through providing comprehensive educational gardening programs to various camps, schools, and communities, we teach children about issues of social justice such as world hunger, sharing limited resources, and the interrelatedness of all beings. The Amir lead farmer is responsible for the implementation and execution of the Amir Project at a summer camp. Each lead farmer must be a charismatic, energetic, and creative indivdual passionate about informal education and youth development. For a flyer outlining the position, click here. -- Maryville University is accepting applications for a part-time (contract employee) Jewish Programming Facilitator as part of a Kranzberg Foundation Grant. This individual reports to the Director of Campus Ministry and Community Service and will work with the Maryville Jewish Student Union to build a core group of engaged Jewish students as well as providing regular programming and presence on campus. Additional duties include working with other area universities to support Jewish student programming. The position runs April 2011 through May 2012 excluding June-July, with continuation pending further funding. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree, and have knowledge and experience of Jewish holidays, laws, customs and traditions as well as trends in Jewish programming and networking on college campuses. Must also have strong knowledge of social networking, and preferably experience in programming with young adults/college students preferred. -- Dickinson College, a leader in the fields of global and sustainability education, is parterning with the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, the premier environmental education and reserach program in the Middle East, to offer a unique summer opportunity for undergraduate students to study environmental sustainability issues in Israel. The four-week program, Environmental Sustainability in the Middle East: Challenges in the Southern Arava, will focus on topics integral to understanding environmental issues in the region such as desert ecology and biodiversity, eco-building and organic gardening, and envionmental ethics, justice, and leadership. -- The Marilyn and Sigi Ziering Brandeis Collegiate Institute (BCI) is an intensive experience in Jewish learning, culture and community offered to young adults, ages 18 to 26, at our summer camp in Southern California. It is a 26-day exploration of self and Judaism within a safe, pluralistic environment, bringing together young Jews from all over the world with some of our people's most compelling, talented scholars and artists to experience the multifaceted aspects of Jewish life, culture, nature and community.
