Previously known as the Community Development Fellowship (CDF), the First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH) initiative is a new and improved way to engage Jewish freshmen at Wash U! If you are a rising sophomore (class of '13) who wants to be a mentor and leader for incoming first year students in 2010, then you should apply to be a FYSH Liaison! FYSH Liaisons are  invested in developing a strong Jewish community at Washington University. The initiative is designed to enhance Jewish life on campus, build leadership, and create meaningful Jewish programming such as Into the Wild and other social events that allow first year students to explore and discover their Jewish identities.

Cornell Professor Visits Wash U
 
Cornell University Professor, Joe Regenstein, PhD., is coming to Wash U to discuss kosher laws and products, and how the market for kosher food has grown and changed over the years. Dr. Regenstein is a Professor of Food Science in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University where he heads the Cornell Kosher and Halal Food Initiative. He is a member of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists (although not himself Orthodox), and is an advisor to the Kashrus Subcommittee of the Committee on Law and Standards of the Conservative Movement. For many years, Dr. Regenstein was a columnist for KASHRUS Magazine.

Join Board members, University staff, and the entire St. Louis Jewish community for dinner on Thursday, Apr. 1 at Hillel. At 7:30pm, Dr. Regenstein will deliver a keynote entitled, "Passover: Kosher Plus -- all the regular laws plus more!" Dr. Regenstein will share how making products to meet the Kosher for Passover market remains a significant challenge for the food industry today and how success in meeting these dietary needs has raised the issue of whether the meaning of Passover gets lost with the convenience. Cost is $14 cash or points. Reservations are required with Bon Appetit no later than Sunday, March 28 through WebFood.

Observing Passover on April 6?
Vote Absentee on Proposition A!
April 6 is a very important election for the St. Louis region and for students to support public transit by voting on Proposition A. April 6 is also the last day of Passover. If you would like to request an absentee ballot for religious reasons, you can pick up a request form at Hillel, and return it to the front desk at Student Union in the DUC by today at 5:00pm (or mail it directly to the St. Louis County Board of Elections by Wednesday March 31) to receive an absentee ballot. Faces of Israel Screening

Join us as we screen the movie Faces of Israel, an exciting and interactive documentary intended for a wide audience, from shul-goers to university and high school students to unaffiliated members of the Jewish community. The film poses a series of questions on hot topics surrounding what it means to live in both a Jewish and democratic state.  It answers these questions through interviews with Israelis ranging from openly gay secular university students to leaders in the Conservative movement to Ultra-Orthodox Jews, including exclusive footage with Israel's Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi. Stay afterward for discussion and some carb-heavy post-Passover refreshments!

Arranged marriage, polygamy, female writers of Yiddish and Hebrew poetry, images of masculinity in the Midrash, gender in the Bible, and men and women in American Jewish culture-these topics and more form the subject matter of classes in Jewish Gender and Women's Studies at The Jewish Theological Seminary. Offered by The Graduate School of JTS, this unique interdisciplinary MA program appeals to students who are intrigued by questions about gender roles in contemporary Jewish communal life, Jewish history, and Judaism.
