Challah for Hunger
Challah for Hunger
Challah for Hunger is a new club on campus that puts together two of central elements of Jewish life: food and Tikkun Olam!  Each week, we bake challah.  On Friday, we sell it in the DUC.  The proceeds then go half to AJWS Sudan Relief Fund and half to the Kornblum Food Pantry.  Come help and have fun! SHIFT WORKERS ARE NEEDED!!  For more information or to sign up, contact us at  washu@challahforhunger.org  Click on the picture to read the article from the Student Life! 
 
Social Change Grant Awards 
St. Louis Hillel at Washington University would like to congratulate two students who have been awarded the Stern Social Change Grant for 2009 from Washington University.  David Fox, class of 2011 and Jacob Siegel, class of 2011 have been chosen as a result of their pursuit of innovative ideas which serve the common good in the spirit of social entrepreneurship.For more info go to Website.

TJ Leydon: "Turning Away from Hate"

After 15 years as a neo-Nazi white supremacist activist and recruiter, Tom "TJ" Leyden experienced a profound change of heart, turned away from hate, and began teaching tolerance. In his campus program, "Turning Away from Hate," Leyden tells his remarkable story and explains his transformation. He helps students understand the harmful culture he escaped and why he is so committed to fighting it today.

Holocaust Awareness Week
Join JSU as they commemorate the holocaust and the millions of Jews and non-Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis.
April 20th & April 21st JSU will display flags representative of each group of people persecuted during the holocaust on the Women's Building lawn and  will read aloud throughout the day the names of those who were killed. Each flag can be sponsored in order to raise money for The Solar Cooker Project, an NGO that helps those displaced by the fighting in the Darfur region of Sudan. If you would like to sponsor a flag, JSU will be tabling in the DUC on April 14th-16th from 11:00am-2:00pm, Contact  Cara at cstaszewski@wustl.edu
 
Notebook Drive for the Back to School Store
Stop by the Wash U bookstore on April 20-22 to purchase a notebook to donate to the NCJW Back to School Store. Hillel is holding a drive for notebooks to contribute to this amazing project held each year in St. Louis. The Back to School Store has helped over 3,300 elementary school children from low-income families in the St. Louis area for the last eight years. St. Louis Hillel Annual Meeting 2009
Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 7:00pm at the Alvin & Jeanette Goldfarb Hillel Building St. Louis Hillel will host the 62nd Annual Meeting chaired by Lesley Levin
The Annual Meeting is also time to present awards to outstanding students.  The Fred J. Rosenbaum Award for enhancing the Jewish Community will be awarded to Annie Lascoe, a graduating senior from California. The Tzedek Award will go to Hannah Rabinowitz, a freshman from New Mexico and Hannah Shaffer a freshman from Tennessee for their commitment to Jewish Communal Service.  Joanne Loiben, a graduating senior at St. Louis University will receive the Nachshon Award given to a student who has shown courage and strength.  Ben Sales, a graduating senior from Northbrook Illinois will be honored for his Commitment to Jewish Life.  Maya Avitan, a graduating senior from Ohio will receive the Commitment to Jewish Learning Award.  The following students will receive a Recognition of Service to the Jewish Community; Becca Leffell and Ben Sattin. The Israel Advocacy Award will be given to Sarah Markenson, a graduating senior at St. Louis University.  Margy Levinson, Aryeh Roskies and Mike Goldfarb will each receive the Leadership Award.

Application Deadline for OTZMA has been extended until April 20! 
In case you are not familiar OTZMA is a service-based leadership development program offering young adults ages 20-26 the unique opportunity to contribute and acquire an in-depth understanding of Israel. The 10-month OTZMA program combines social action, civil rights and community building. Spend three months in an absorption center learning Hebrew, three months doing community service using your skills in a development town and three months on a kibbutz or participating in an internship! ADL's Campus Leadership Study Mission to Israel
June 8-17, 2009
Provides student journalists and politically active leaders with a FREE up-close and personal perspective of Israel by learning about the strategic and social challenges facing Israel today. Mission participants will meet with key decision-makers, government and military officials, diplomats, journalists, students and everyday Israelis --Arab and Jewish -- from diverse communities, cultures and backgrounds. Participants will visit sights of historical, religious and contemporary interest. The group will take all necessary security precautions and will avoid potentially dangerous areas. WILL WORK FOR FOOD (WWFF) is an initiative to galvanize a generation of students to personally respond to the growing humanitarian crisis in Darfur and the surrounding region by providing direct relief for the hundreds of thousands of people who are in desperate need of food, shelter, health care and other basic life necessities. Hillel's Schusterman International Center is now accepting applications for the fall 2009 Global Campus Initiative peer engagement internships in Buenos Aires and London. Summer Study Abroad with Hillel Uruguay
From June 8 to July 7, students and young professionals aged 18 - 30 have the opportunity to take intensive Spanish language courses of all levels for university credit. They will also have access to field trips, kosher meals, accomodations in a hotel, potential internships, a Tzedek-intensive curriculum, meeting Jewish students and young professionals from Uruguay and other countries, and of course immersing themselves in the warm and close-knit Jewish community of Montevideo. Groundbreaking Conflict Transformation Program Launches for Fourth Straight Year
This ten-month fellowship, affiliated with the University of San Francisco's Center for Global Education, begins with a month-long trip to the Balkans, meeting activists and scholars alike in Serbia, Kosovo, and Bosnia-Herzegovnia. Students study the Balkan wars of the 1990s in an effort to re-examine the seemingly intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict. During the academic year immediately following the summer students engage in two four-day conferences, aimed to empower them to engage with students on their campus, and organize campus and community presentations, helping them articulate their own activist voices.
