ENDURANCE TRIAL

Twenty dogs were entered in the sixth RRCUS Endurance Trial on Sunday, though in the end only 13 competed. (Drops-out included bitches in season, dogs that were too young and dogs that had blown their pads lure-coursing earlier in the month.) The course was 12 miles by bike or foot, and seven handlers decided to forgoe the wheels and jog the distance.

Greetings!

Here comes the judge ... and the winners!

Paula Hartinger took command of her ring this morning, moving efficiently and pleasantly through her entry. She placed emphasis on the down-and-back, asking each handler to repeat the pattern once all the individual exams were complete. Expression was also important -- see our Tic Tac report below.

Included in this email are the results for Veteran Dogs, Class Dogs, Stud Dogs and Best Ridge.

Also, at left are the results for Obedience, Rally, Agility and the Endurance Trial.

If there were an event for typing, we think we'd place.

Here's to nubbin fingers!

Color Them Beautiful

Pro handler Linda Clark makes another appearance in our Best Dressed Ridgebacker feature -- you just can't keep a good accessorizer down! Who else would find just the right shade of lavender loafers to match her suit?

Pressing her closely in the sartorial department was Californian Michele Bohrer, who paired a fresh green skirt with a jewel-toned print jacket, studded with tiny ivory beads. Her matching pendant was the perfect capper.

About the Judge

Paula Hartinger, along with her husband Roger, has been involved in purebred dogs for more than a half-century. The couple's first dog was a Great Dane, but they are best known for their Standard Schnauzers. The Hartingers also bred Basset Hounds and Lakeland terriers, and exhibited and owned West Highland Terriers and Beagles.

A former professional handler, Mrs. Hartinger became a judge in 1975, and is approved to judge all breeds. Her assignments have taken her all over the United States and to 25 other countries.

This is Mrs. Hartinger's second time judging the RRCUS National Specialty; the first time was in 1990.

Do you hear what I hear?

Judges have different ways of eliciting expression, from kissy-kissy sounds to that old standby, the crinkling candy wrapper. Mrs. Hartinger's ear-perker of choice was a box of Tic Tacs (peppermint flavor, of course), tapped with her fingernail  as she made her way down the line.
