Students consider Ohio's place in the Global Economy

YFJan2011

At a January 7 CCWA youth forum, local high school students learned how business and government decisions can affect our world economy in respect to offshoring.  They were convened to consider this topic in the context of today's political climate, and in response to local newspaper articles.  These news items alerted participants to the fact that the US Senate was unable to pass an anti-offshoring bill in September of 2010 while Ohio Governor Ted Stickland passed an executive order banning overseas outsourcing of services by state government (prompting a similar move by leadership at the Ohio State University).  These policies were met with criticism from Indian companies and trade representatives, who spoke out in the media about the dangers of protectionism in a global economy.  The forum's purpose was to show the high school students how and why offshoring decisions are made, what the result of these decisions may be, and how those decisions can affect these students' futures in the job market and as consumers...

A full synopsis of the forum can be found here.

The Columbus Council on World Affairs hosts several youth forums yearly, highlighting topics of international relevance in the Columbus community. This forum was presented in partnership with The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, with help from The Columbus Metropolitan Library and the Ohio State University Global Gateway Initiative. Our youth programs are financially supported by Honda of America and the Lindorf Family Foundation. Kiwanis Club of Columbus was a presenting sponsor of this event, providing transportation to attendee schools.
Web cast provided access to high-level speakers

The World Affairs Council of DC, supported by the Columbus Council on World Affairs, aired a live "Speaks to America" web cast of their luncheon. Through this special partnership program, CCWA members were invited to pose questions via email to the distinguished lecturers.

This December 15 event, called "Global Threats - US Response: The Next 20 Years" featured The Honorable William J. Perry, Former US Secretary of Defense, and The Honorable Stephen J. Hadley, Former US National Security Advisor.  The speakers covered topics such as offshoring American jobs, the competitiveness of the US in the global economy, and US public opinion about what should be government priorities.

It was revealed that a majority of Americans believe that the government should be involved in tax incentives and education but should remain hands-off in manufacturing, such as through direct subsidies.  Furthermore, some Americans believe that China is becoming increasingly competitive with the US, as they take "full advantage of what they can do," while they are less optimistic about the US's financial prospects than they were a year ago.  The speakers also stressed the need for policymakers to work together in the government rather than allowing bipartisanship to stall progress.  The talk was followed by approximately 30 minutes of question and answer, focusing on topics such as the national budget, the Air Force, North Korea, and India.
