Globalization and the Midwest Conference
"Financing the Midwest Energy Transition: Innovation and Infrastructure"
Monday, October 18 The City Club of Cleveland
The Midwest, rich in natural resources and industrial expertise, is well suited to become a global leader in the energy economy, but the energy transition will nevertheless have profound and costly effects on the region. Existing energy systems will need to be replaced or upgraded, and new technologies developed and deployed. The expenses and ramifications will be substantial; new financing mechanisms will be needed to sustain the innovation and infrastructure.
Come learn from experts and share ideas about this exciting topic. This 3rd annual conference is organized by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. This year's program is presented in collaboration with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and the Columbus Council on World Affairs.

The summer months are always a time for our staff to evaluate the preceding year, plan for the next year, do grant writing, goal-setting, and other important work which keeps the organization thriving! Programming continues amid this activity, however. Here is a look at some recent endeavors:
|
Youth Programs
Our Director of Youth Programs was out on family leave for much of the summer following the birth of her baby boy Henry. In her absence, Bobbie Mucha -- a past honoree for the Council's International Educator of the Year award -- worked to deliver programs. Specifically, we continued our "Culture Camp" format, in which our staff coordinates with existing summer camps in the region and offers to infuse their offerings with global elements. We have partnered with Thurber House on this endeavor for several years and, this past summer, extended our reach into Licking County and to other Columbus organizations.
Special thanks to Maureen Pritchard, who assisted Bobbie in engaging local kids in the pre-school through middle school age levels. We also appreciate the work of the local chapter of Engineers Without Borders, and longstanding CCWA member Dave Pritchard, who co-presented at a "Girls In Gear" camp session at The Works Museum in Newark.

Community ProgramsWe were pleased to have welcomed Cal Darden in August as he described "Coca-Cola Enterprises' Sustainability Journey." Fortune Magazine ranked Darden eighth on its 50 Most Powerful Black Executives in America list in 2002, above former White House adviser Vernon Jordan and TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey. This symposium was part of our ongoing Global Sustainability Series. It was held at the new Ohio Union, which has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver-level certification. Another August keynote speaker's timely visit framed important themes related to President Obama's impending visit to India in November. Consul General Prabhu Dayal's remarks also provided context to related local issues such as the planned Ohio State's

Gateway presence in New Delhi. Columbus is home to a thriving Indian population. "Mr. Dayal's talk highlighted the growing international recognition of India as an emerging force in the world economy," noted Sanjay Sadana, a prominent member of Columbus' Indian community and a lecture attendee. "With its emphasis on India's focus on the five E's - economy, enterprise, education, energy and empowerment - the Consul General's informative presentation underscored the many similarities between the US and India."

Organizational Updates
The Council is updating the look of its website, which will be launched within the month. We hope the revamped design - made possible by in-kind support from Ibel Agency - will lend itself to longer browsing. In the new platform, staff members will be able to make their own updates, which will ensure that the content is dynamic and kept current. We are also undergoing a long-term evaluation process dubbed "Vision 2012," to assess community needs and their relationship to CCWA's program approach. Thank you to the community stakeholders who were interviewed or completed the extensive survey for this purpose.
Lastly, the Council acquired the expertise of five new Board members in the past six months: Sebastian Ibel of Ibel Agency, Bob Miller of Jones Day, Sandy Nessing of AEP, Thomas Redmond of PNC Financial Services Group, and Brett Thornton of the lawfirm Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur. The organization will benefit greatly from their contributions.

Political will for Climate actions lacking Speaker says let China serve as example
During one of Dr. Richard Sandor's recent visits to China, he delivered a university lecture in which he described the fundamentals of cap and trade to the students. Midway through his remarks, another professor informed him that he was practically "talking down" to the audience members. He raised the level of discourse in response to the students' sophisticated questions and, at a recent Columbus Council on World Affairs symposium, Sandor remarked that the students' in-depth knowledge of green trading concepts is surely a sign of China's commitment to improving their environmental record. He said China's progress in this regard can serve as an example to the United States and the rest

of the world.
For those less familiar with the workings of the green trading approach, he presented the basics: Cap and trade incentivizes corporations to reduce harmful emissions in exchange for a financial gain. The government places a "cap" on the total amount of harmful pollutants emitted and corporations can buy their rights to emit these pollutants. Corporations may lower their emissions and then trade extra rights on the market. In essence, the corporations are paying to pollute and profiting from reducing emissions. Sandor discussed the ways that harmful emissions, such as sulfur, have been reduced through this model and how the same progress can be made with carbon emissions worldwide.
