| Aayo Ifis means a BRIGHT FUTURE for Somali youth
CCWA summer journalism program trained 60 Central Ohio students
After 5 weeks of intense instruction in the fundamentals of journalism, this year's edition of Aayo Ifis -- translated as "bright future" in Somali -- rolled off the presses to the great pride (and relief) of the students and staff who worked to make it possible.
Journalism is the perfect outlet for facilitating intercultural interaction, says Stephanie Calondis Geiger, which is why CCWA was willing to allocate so much of her time (as our Director of Youth Programs) toward making this program partnership a success.
"Reporting gives students a reason to talk with people they never would have approached before because they have to interview them for a story assignment," she says. "In this particular case, it also gave non-Somali people an excuse to talk to kids in their community they may have wanted to connect with before but they perhaps felt intimidated or worried about making cultural mistakes and so they decided to essentially opt out of dialogue."
Calondis Geiger added that the program had many other positive implications for the young people who participated, beyond cultural exposure. To read her reflections on the program, including the goals and activities, please keep your eyes on our website!
This program was delivered in partnership with Lorz Communications and Helping Africans in New Directions (HAND).
Culture Camp modules deliver summer fun
In partnership with the Thurber House, Short Stop Center, the Sierra Club, and Columbus Parks and Recreation, CCWA youth programs staff infused existing summer camps/youth trainings with intercultural elements. This included simulations, writing exercises, a Silk Road music workshop, and a giant kickball game which brought together Somali teens with other local youth. This summer was the pilot year of this type of partnership opportunity and we plan to offer it again next year!

In their words... Aayo Ifis graduation remarks from Safia Sheikh

Safia is a graduate of the summer journalism program who will attend OSU in the fall. She was asked by our staff to make remarks at the closing ceremony July 31. Here is what she said on behalf of the group: "Did you know that in the United States Constitution, the First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press? This means that people can receive the news and others can report it without fearing the government. That is not necessarily true for the many countries that don't have this freedom. My journalism class learned about press freedoms from one of our speakers, Frank Smyth, who is from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). Smyth, who came all the way from Washington D.C., talked to us about Nasteh Dahir Farah who was a contributor to BBC and The New York Times who was killed this past June in Kismayo, most likely because he wrote stories that certain people did not want printed. Somalia is rated the second most dangerous place for journalists, after Iraq..."...Read (and comment on) the rest of Safia's address on our blog

Sharing perspectives on Georgia conflict Upcoming web discussion will allow YOU the chance to ask questions!
Our staff and interns are in the process of reaching out to local, national, and international stakeholders who can provide opinions and facts about the current actions in Georgia. This situation has already led to significant civilian casualties, injuries, and displacement. What does it mean for the U.S. relationship with Russia, and by extension Russia's allies? What is the impact for regular citizens? We plan to arrange an online discussion format, with options that include: "live" discussion, bulletin board, and/or "Ask an Expert" email submissions. Please let us know if this is of interest and we'll notify you of any opportunities. You can do this by sending a blank email to Stephanie with "Georgia discussion interest" in the subject line. Also, if you have recommendations for commentators, please let us know!

Area experts make policy recommendations Columbus Collaborative proves to be a great forum for idea exchange
"The US has entered the early
stage of the repayment phase of its war-time borrowing program.
If policy makers continue to ignore the inevitable, the economic consequences
will be severe,"said Dr.Stephen Buser in an advisory memo drafted to a "President McBama" following our June 10 symposium. Buser is Professor of Finance Emeritus at the Fisher College of Business. This event, in partnership with WOSU, sought to provide a forum for audience interaction with local experts on global issues. These experts included Dr. Richard Hermann of the Mershon Center, Dr. Peter Schramm of the Ashbrook Center, and Buser. You can always read summaries of past event and/or links to content-related info at the Resources page of our website.
