Gemini New Moon/Solar Eclipse * May 20
|
This piece was made by OKA, a famous Balinese mask maker. It took him 7 years to create it - working on it only during the time of the Full Moon. It's an image of the Sun devouring the Moon - which is what happens during an eclipse. He had not intended to ever sell it. Because I knew the story that it portrays, OKA agreed to sell me this fabulous Goddess. He graciously accepted a minimum payment; it was more of a gift and an acknowledgement to the art of astrology.

Today, May 20th, beginning at 4:47 PM Pacific time, and 7:47 Eastern time, we will experience a solar Eclipse in the first degree of Gemini. During a solar eclipse, the Moon comes between the earth and the Sun so that the sunlight is blocked, either fully or partially. Normally, at New Moon, although present, the moon is invisible in the sky. However, when eclipsed by the Sun, through the actions illumination , the previously invisible Moon can be seen.
In ancient China a solar eclipse was called the "sun-eating dragon." Incas believed it was caused by a demon eating the sun. Some Australian aboriginal tribes, however, take a more romantic view and believe the sun and the moon made love during those moments when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, creating a shadow across the land.
Solar eclipses tend to be external, and on the personal level will trigger events that you may have not consciously planned. This Gemini eclipse also promises to deliver many changes on the world front.  This eclipse of May 20th is an 'annular', or ring eclipse. When viewed in totality, the sun will be visible as a ring around what would otherwise be an invisible Moon. Eclipses bring things to light; they illuminate things which have been previously unseen or even deliberately hidden. This New Moon is still a time of initiation, renewed energy, and vitality. For individuals, eclipses are interpreted based on the sign in which they occurs, and how the degree interacts with other planetary bodies in the sky and within your personal chart.
Eclipses are also evaluated by what is called the Saros Cycle.As first documented by the ancient Babylonians, each eclipse is part of a long term cycle which lasts over 1000 years. Each eclipse has a family, place of origin, and an astrological history and nomenclature.
This eclipse has a particularly positive interpretation - one of success which is derived from long periods of hard work. The upcoming months should deliver acceptance of new ideas and long awaited breakthroughs. The degree of the Sun and Moon are also squaring, or challenging Neptune, so, this is another cosmic marker for an era of truth and the end of misinformation. I truly believe that this eclipse and the upcoming Venus transit of June 5th signal a new era of transparency in world government and finances, as well as a positive shift for all.
