20 Ideas I Wish I was Taught at 20 part 1 of 2
|
by Dennis Harting
Success
seems to be an elusive treasure for many. There are some many ways to attain it
yet most of us get caught up trying to figure it all out ourselves. This leads
to a great deal of lost time to gain the "experience" needed to be successful.
Looking back, I wish someone had put together a list of hard facts that were
true in life. Since it was not done for me, I would like to share my list of
success "truths".
1. Success is easier with a team: Success
is not created in a vacuum. It takes the efforts of many people to make one
achieve anything great. The most successful people have partners, coaches,
teammates, and co-workers who all have a hand in the final outcome. Also, our
the level of success that is possible increase substantially when we enlist the
abilities and efforts of others. As Marc Victor Hanson likes to say "one plus
one is an eleven folding of talent". Create a team with the best people that
you can.
2. Opportunities are everywhere: Everywhere
there is a problem, there is an opportunity. The world is full of challenges
that are waiting to be solved. As we proceed forward, now obstacles are created
daily. Huge fortunes are being made by people taking the initiative to solve
these problems. Society needs someone to build a better "mousetrap" and that
person is you. Look for the opportunities in your life that are offered to you.
3. You get more in life by saying "yes"
than by saying "no": This is one of Richard Branson's sayings. Fear is a
powerful influence in life. It causes us to make decisions that are not always
in our best interest. Often we turn down opportunities which will raise our
lives to a new level. Saying "yes" to life allows us to engage in the wonders
of it. There is more that is gained by going forward then by standing still.
Certainly we will lose at times. But overcoming the fear of loss is what will
set us free. Begin to say "yes" to the opportunities that are presented in your
life.
4. Like attracts like: Physics talks
about energy on the same frequency being attracted to similar energy. This is
true for our outlook. Positive attitudes garner positive results. Negative
attitudes create gets the same outcome. To get more positive results in life,
spend more time with a positive attitude. This will attract the desired results
into your life.
5. The path to success is already laid
out: Reinventing the wheel is a waste of time. Unlike we were taught in
school, copying is a good thing. People have already paved the road to success.
Simply learn the actions and procedures they took while following suit. Every
industry has a model that sets the process for achievement. Life becomes much
simpler when that is uncovered.
6. Have fun: It is easy to get caught up
in all that we have to do. Responsibilities mount the more success we
achieve. It is important to have fun at every stage of life. Too often people
delay their joy until they arrive at a specific destination. Taking the time
for ourselves is crucial as holistic selves. Lighten up and take things a
little less seriously.
7. Work smarter, not harder: Digging
ditches is hard work yet it is not a well compensated trade. The world pays
more for mental power than it does physical. Try to determine ways to
systematize the things you need to do to free up yourself. The nobility is in
working smarter, not harder.
8. Things do not equal happiness: The
richest are not always the happiest. The accumulation of things is wonderful.
However, it is imperative that we keep in mind what is important. The happiness
that "things" give us is temporary. Happiness is a state that comes from within
us; it rarely comes from the outside.
9. Who cares about the Joneses: How
much time do we spend trying to "keep up with the Joneses"? Our egos are often
tied to the opinion of others. Be your own person. Ignore what others think
about you. It is best to pursue endeavors which fulfill us. Too many attend to
those things that other people want them to. Live your life according to how
you see fit.
10. There is always something to be
grateful for: No matter how bad things are in your life, there is always
something to be grateful for. Gratitude is a wonderful tool for getting us out
of the doldrums. Looking at the positive aspect of situations will always help
bring the undesirable effects to an end quicker. Remember, there is always
someone else who is worse off than you.

Well, last month I mentioned how wet and rainy the weather had been and the rain stopped. I can't wait until it gets really hot this summer to see if I can get the heat to stop too! (LOL!!).
Since our last visit the taxes have been filed, refunds have been received and we've been staying busy helping many of you manage your stress and/or pain. Many of our "snowbird" friends have returned to cooler climes (even though I explained that it's a dry heat and everything is air-conditioned).
In addition to massage Roxie has been busy with her hobby by showing two horses at several horse shows. My hobby is reading and studying and lately I've been learning several new techniques (which of course I share with Roxie) that have greatly added to what we are offering in the area of pain relief.
We just accepted an invitation to the Family Day
Event at Bella Via community (Signal Butte Rd south of Warner Rd). We'll
be promoting in-home massage and enjoying the sunshine Saturday, April
17 from 2:00PM until 5:00PM. If you know anyone in this community let
them know we'll be there!

| 10 Ways to Keep Life Simple and Organized | |
1. File it: Create a filing system that is properly labeled for everything: receipts,
invoices, bills to pay, bills paid, client information, leads, marketing
materials, ideas, marketing plans, etc.
2. Clean out the trash: Empty your wallet, purse, car and pockets everyday and put all your papers in
the right file.
3. Make a date: Choose a time of day to spend 10 minutes getting your papers organized.
4. Book an appointment: Take half an hour on Sunday to plan out your week's priorities.
5. Schedule it: Use your planner (paper or electronic) to block time for all the things you
need to get done during the week.
6. Itemize your list of things to do: Work, family, home, health/exercise, education, personal time, charity etc. By
identifying on a weekly basis each area of your life, you will find the time to
take care of everything.
7. Prioritize: It's too easy to be 'busy' with things that are not important. Prioritize the
'must do' list and make sure you don't get off track.
8. Your planner is your best friend: Friends help us. Religiously using your planner will ensure you stay on track.
This is a habit worth developing.
9. Enjoy your Kingdom: Your workspace needs to be a supportive environment to help you stay focused.
Keeping it organized, comfortable and away from family life helps you avoid the
pitfalls of distraction.
10. Internet pit: Hours are lost checking for email, answering emails that are not important at
that moment, logging into Facebook, surfing the internet etc. I challenge you
to time how much of your day is wasted on the Internet and on keeping busy with
non-productive work. This is valuable time that could be put to better use for
personal growth.
Staying
on task is not easy, it takes a lot of self-discipline. _________________

| Why Massage Helps Stiff Achy Joints
|
Many people
have problems with joints that are stiff and achy. Even worse is when movement of those joints
causes pain. You know that massage is
wonderful for reducing stress, but did you know it is also a powerful weapon to
have in your arsenal for pain relief? Here's a
quick crash-course lesson in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and biomechanics.
Muscles cross joints. That's it.
That's all you need to know. It really is that simple, let me explain. Let's take
the knee which is a simple hinge joint. If
we want to move the door that's hanging on a hinge we apply a force to the door
to push or pull it open. But let's take
a door with an automatic closer on it.
One end is attached to the door while the other end is attached to the
door jamb on the other side of the hinge. Muscles are comparable to the automatic
closer. When contracted they supply the
force that moves the joint. With the knee, the hamstrings muscle group (on the
back of the thigh) attach below the
knee while the gastrocnemius (largest muscle of the calf) attaches above the knee. When contracted these
muscles cause the knee joint to bend bringing the foot up toward the buttock.
Likewise, on the front of the thigh is the powerful quadriceps muscle group which
attaches below the knee and on
contraction straightens the knee. Simply
biomechanics; but wait, there's more. Sometimes
due to trauma, overuse, or even lack of use, those muscles become chronically
shortened. Now we have a problem. The
muscles that are supposed to create
the movement of the joint now begin to restrict
it. The bursae (fluid filled sacs that
cushion and reduce friction between bones and tendons) may become inflamed,
which is the condition known as bursitis.
Increased
joint pressure caused by muscle tightness creates a kind of mortar and pestle
effect on the cartilage (the gristle that the bones move on) which causes it to
wear out prematurely. This is called
osteoarthritis. As the condition worsens
and bone begins to rub on bone, boney outgrowths (osteophytes) will develop which
further destroy the cartilage. Massage
cannot fix osteoarthritis. It cannot fix
bursitis. But, massage CAN loosen tight, restricted muscles thereby easing the
pressure and freeing the joint structure to move in the way it was intended! The next
time you have stiff achy joints remember this: muscles cross joints. Your
body is telling you it's time for a massage. |
5 Things That Will Make You Happier
| Clara Moskowitz, LiveScience Senior
Writer
SAN DIEGO - The pursuit of happiness is
sometimes easier said than done.
Some scientists have argued that happiness is largely
determined by genetics, health and other factors mostly outside of our control.
But recent research suggests people actually can take charge of their own
happiness and boost it through certain practices.
"The billion-dollar question is, is it possible to
become happier?" said psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky of the University of California,
Riverside.
"Despite the finding that happiness is partially genetically determined,
and despite the finding that life situations have a smaller influence on our
happiness than we think they do, we argue that still a large portion of
happiness is in our power to change."
Lyubomirsky spoke here Saturday at the annual meeting of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science. She and colleagues last
year reviewed 51 studies that tested attempts to increase happiness through
different types of positive thinking, and found that these practices can
significantly enhance well-being. The results were published in the Journal of
Clinical Psychology.
Here are five things that research has shown can improve
happiness:
1. Be grateful -Some study participants were asked
to write letters of gratitude to people who had helped them in some way. The
study found that these people reported a lasting increase in happiness - over
weeks and even months - after implementing the habit. What's even more
surprising: Sending the letter is not necessary. Even when people wrote letters
but never delivered them to the addressee, they still reported feeling better
afterwards.
2. Be optimistic - Another practice that seems to
help is optimistic thinking. Study participants were asked to visualize an
ideal future - for example, living with a loving and supportive partner, or
finding a job that was fulfilling - and describe the image in a journal entry.
After doing this for a few weeks, these people too reported increased feelings
of well-being.
3. Count your blessings - People who practice writing down
three good things that have happened to them every week show significant boosts
in happiness, studies have found. It seems the act of focusing on the positive
helps people remember reasons to be glad.
4. Use your strengths - Another study asked people to
identify their greatest strengths, and then to try to use these strengths in
new ways. For example, someone who says they have a good sense of humor could
try telling jokes to lighten up business meetings or cheer up sad friends. This
habit, too, seems to heighten happiness.
5. Commit acts of kindness - It turns out helping others also
helps ourselves. People who donate time or money to charity, or who
altruistically assist people in need, report improvements in their own
happiness.
Lyubomirsky has also created a free iPhone application, called Live Happy, to
help people boost their well-being.
