3 Ways to
Never Have Regrets!
|
by Robin
Sacks
Which is more frightening...failure or regret? I'll tell you
something, "failure" (whatever that means) does not scare me in the
least. Regret scares the hell out of me!
Mark Twain said, "20 years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things you did not do than by the things you did do."
So let's get off of the proverbial hamster- wheel of life for a moment and
really think about why this is so important. Ask yourself this question...what
will you miss?
Not miss as in 'long for.' Miss as in once it passes you by,
you will never have that opportunity again.
It is disturbing to think about how we spend a lifetime
striving for "success" (whatever that means) and rarely find it. It
is even more disturbing to think about all of the things that, because you were
wearing your blinders (looking for "success"), you have already
missed. Take yourself out 5, 10, 15, 20 years. What will you look back on and
think, "I always wanted to do that" or "I wish I would have
gotten to more of Billy's ballgames" or "I have had success but never
fulfillment." Once certain things pass, they are gone forever. If you,
like most of our society, are in the habit of "yes, but-ting" your
way to misery, time is of the essence!
Here are 3 ways to never look back and have regrets!
1. Get some clarity. We live such unconscious lives. We live
lives just "going through the motions" to look back at some point and
wonder where it went. If you never knew what you wanted, do not ever say you
never had the chance.
2. We often say that "Hindsight is 20/20." We also
often use it as a negative. It is usually prefaced with "I should
have...", but now it is "too late." Learn how to use 20/20
hindsight in a positive and forward way. Realize that today is your 20/20
hindsight tomorrow and every day going forward. You cannot change the past, nor
can you predict the future. There is only 1 time when you have any
control...NOW! Take some action today to make tomorrow better.
3. Do not focus on "succeeding" focus on
"exceeding." Big difference. Success implies an end. You can do an
awful lot of legwork and still not find success. You either had
"success" or you "failed." However, if you get one step closer
to accomplishing something, you have exceeded what you previously did. It is a
one-step approach instead of an all-or-nothing approach.
Willis R. Whitney said, "Some men have thousands of
reasons why they cannot do what they want to, when all they need is one reason
why they can." Who knew...Nike is right...Just Do It! Stop making excuses.
Get some clarity on what you are missing and make a decision to take action.
The dishes in the sink can wait while you read a book to
your child. The laundry can be started and now you have a half and hour of time
to take care of other tasks. If you have something in your schedule that you do
not really want to do, say "no" and do something more meaningful and
productive. Ask yourself regularly, will I look back on this and have positive
20/20 hindsight or will I have regrets that will eat at me because I did not do
it. Go from "I should have" to "I did." If you do that one
simple task you will save yourself a lifetime of regret.
We create most of the stress in our lives. We also create
most of the happiness. Get out of your own way.

With one of the wettest winters on record in Arizona we've been busy! What else do you do on a rainy day besides get a massage? It just seems like relaxing with a great massage is a most wonderful way to spend part of a day when it's rainy and windy and cold outside.
Another thing to do is pick up a great book to read. Roxie and I have been reading Robert Fulghum's, "What On Earth Have I Done?" It's a delightful series of short essays about life.
You may recognize Robert Fulghum as the author of, "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." His writings are about common life experiences but with an eye to humor lest we take ourselves to seriously.
Check out his wit at robertfulghum.com.

Happy People Talk More, and With More Substance
|
LiveScience
Happy
people tend to talk more than unhappy people, but when they do, it tends to be
less small talk and more substance, a new study finds.
A group of
psychologists from the University of Arizona and Washington
University in St. Louis set out to find whether happy and
unhappy people differ in the types of conversations they tend to have.
For their
study, volunteers wore an unobtrusive recording device called the Electronically
Activated Recorder (EAR) over four days. The device periodically records
snippets of sounds as participants go about their lives.
For this
experiment, the EAR sampled 30 seconds of sounds every 12.5 minutes yielding a
total of more than 20,000 recordings.
Researchers
then listened to the recordings and identified the conversations as trivial
small talk or substantive discussions. In addition, the volunteers completed
personality and well-being assessments.
Here's what
the researchers found:
The happiest participants spent
25 percent less time alone and 70 percent more time talking than the
unhappiest participants.
The happiest participants also
had twice as many substantive conversations and one-third as much small
talk as the unhappiest participants.
The
findings, to be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Psychological
Science, suggest that happy lives are social and conversationally deep, rather
than solitary and superficial.
The
researchers think that deep conversations may have the potential to make people
happier, though the findings from this study don't identify cause-and-effect
between the two.

It's Now
Or Never!
|
by Terry A.
Smith
Seize The Day!! I've always been inspired by this phrase
because it holds so much promise of what's possible and what we can do with the
present moment. People waste so much time and energy "poisoning the
present" with worries, doubts and anxieties of yesterday. Yesterday does
not exist. But the present moment does. So here is what you can do with it.
Focus on what's truly important to you. Pick one thing and
make it your 'Now' and give it your best shot. Feel good about your effort. Put
yourself out there and see what happens. If your results are less than
desirable, then ask yourself; what you learned from it, what else you need to
know or do and make another effort.
Failure is nothing more than "lessons on life" and
how to get it right next time. I remember getting turned down at high school
from a girl I asked to a dance. She told me no and said she didn't date guys
with acne. Crushed my ego at the time but did inspire me to see a dermatologist
which turned out to be a good thing for me. Can you imagine if I had given up
after that initial dating effort. Fortunately for me (and my two kids) my wife
said yes (no acne).
I urge you to live fully in the now, even if it is not the
'now' you would like it to be. It is the present moment that is charged full of
power and possibility. And the good new is... you have full control over what
the 'next now' will be like. Someone once said that the future is nothing more
than a succession of pending nows. If you choose to embrace that concept, then
what would you have them be like, what would be the ideal for you, now that you
are in control.
A person without a dream is a person without a future, at
least not one of his or her own choosing. You can change that if you learn to
seize the day by seizing the moment. Change your thinking about what's possible
for you. Ask yourself, what is one thing that is easy to do, "one thing I
can do that will make this moment mine?" And what else? And what else?
Get a feeling of personal power, moment by moment. Learn to
live intensely in the present moment. When you do, life will present you with a
future of your own choosing.
