WOMEN NEED MORE SLEEP THAN MEN | Two studies suggest that women really do need more sleep
than men.
A study of 210 apparently healthy, middle-aged men and women
without any history of sleep disorders, led by Edward Suarez at Duke University
found that poor sleep is associated with greater psychological distress and
higher levels of the biomarkers associated with elevated risk of heart disease
and type 2 diabetes in women. Poor sleep patterns in the men did not result in
the same distress and elevated biomarkers. None of the participants smoked or
took regular daily medications and investigators excluded any women on hormone
therapy, because some studies have shown hormone replacement to alter sleep
patterns in some women. The study appeared in the online journal Brain,
Behavior and Immunity.
In another study by researchers at the University of Warwick
in 2007, it was found that women who slept five or less hours a night were
twice as likely to suffer from hypertension than women who slept for seven or
more hours. For men, there was no link between lack of sleep and hypertension. More
than 6,000 people were studied in this trial.

5 PAINFUL FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW | By Robert
Roy Britt, LiveScience Managing Editor
Pain forces
an estimated 36 million U.S.
residents to miss work every year and results in roughly 70 million doctor
visits. Studies find that exercise is in many cases one of the best remedies
for chronic pain.
First off, let's set the record straight: Pain is normal.
About 75 million U.S.
residents endure chronic or recurrent pain. Migraines plague 25 million of us.
One in six suffers arthritis.
The global pain industry peddles more than $50 billion in
drugs a year. Yet for chronic pain sufferers, over-the-counter pills are
typically little help, while morphine and other narcotics can be addictive
sedatives.
An overview study published in the June 2008 Journal of General Internal Medicine
looked at multiple studies of pain and found "researchers don't yet know
how to determine which [treatment] is best for individual patients." From
studies of drugs to surgeries and alternative medicines, "We have found
that there are huge gaps in our knowledge base," said Dr. Matthew J. Bair,
assistant professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
So what is pain and why do so many suffer so long?
Pain is felt when electrical signals are sent from nerve
endings to your brain, which in turn can release painkillers called endorphins
and generate reactions that range from instant and physical to long-term and
emotional. Beyond that, scientific understanding gets painfully fuzzy. Here's
what's known:
1. Scientist don't understand pain
When you're in pain, you know it. But if scientists could
fully grasp how pain works and why, they might be able to help you more. The American Academy of Pain Medicine defines pain as
"an unpleasant sensation and emotional response to that sensation."
Some pain is the result of an obvious injury. Other times, it is caused by
damaged nerves that are not so easy to pinpoint. "Pain is complex and
defies our ability to establish a clear definition," says Kathryn Weiner,
director of the American
Academy of Pain
Management. "Pain is far more than neural transmission and sensory
transduction. Pain is a complex mixture of emotions, culture, experience,
spirit and sensation."
2. Chronic pain shrinks brains
If you have chronic pain, you know how demoralizing and
debilitating it can be, physically and mentally. It can prevent you from doing
things and make you irritable for reasons nobody else understands. But that's
only half the story. People with chronic backaches have brains as much as 11
percent smaller than those of non-sufferers, scientists reported in 2004. They
don't know why. "It is possible it's just the stress of having to live
with the condition," said study leader A. Vania Apkarian of Northwestern University. "The neurons become
overactive or tired of the activity."
3. Migraines and sex go together
It may not eliminate the phrase "Not tonight, honey
..." but a 2006 study found that migraine sufferers had levels of sexual
desire 20 percent higher than those suffering from tension headaches. The
finding suggests sexual desire and migraines might be influenced by the same
brain chemical, and getting a better handle on the link could lead to better
treatments, at least for the pain portion of the equation.
4. Women feel more pain
Any man who has watched a woman having a baby without using
drugs would swear that women can tolerate anything. But the truth is, guys, it
hurts more than you can imagine. Women have more nerve receptors than men. As
an example, women have 34 nerve fibers per square centimeter of facial skin,
while men average just 17. And in a 2005 study, women were found to report more
pain throughout their lifetimes and, compared to men, they feel pain in more
areas of their body and for longer durations.
5. Some animals don't feel our pain
Animal research could offer clues to eventually relieve
human suffering. Take the naked mole rat, a hairless and nearly blind
subterranean creature. A study this year found it feels neither the pain of
acid nor the sting of chili peppers. If researchers can figure out why, they
might be on the road to new sorts of painkilling therapies for humans. In 2006,
scientists found a pathway for the transmission of chronic pain in rats that
they hope will translate into better understanding of human chronic pain.
Lobsters feel no pain, even when boiled, scientists said in a 2005 report that
is just one more salvo in a long-running debate.
What you can do
Meanwhile, exercise is a useful remedy for many types of
chronic pain.
In an Italian study detailed in the May issue of the journal
Cephalalgia, office workers did
relaxation and posture exercises every two to three hours. Over an eight-month
period, they kept diaries, which were then compared to those of a control group
that did not change habits. In the end, the group that exercised reported that
headaches and neck and shoulder pain decreased by more than 40 per cent, and their
use of painkillers was cut in half.
"Physical activity is actually a natural pain reliever
for most people suffering from arthritis," concludes another study
published in the Arthritis Care and
Research journal in April. "Even minor lifestyle changes like
taking a 10-minute walk three times a day can reduce the impact of arthritis on
a person's daily activities and help to prevent developing more painful
arthritis," said Dr. Patience White, chief public health officer of the
Arthritis Foundation. "Physical activity can actually reduce pain
naturally and decrease dependence on pain medications."

Happy New Year!
I can hardly believe it's already past the fifteenth of the first month of the year. Seems like it was just yesterday that I made that resolution that I was going to get the newsletter out before the fifteenth!
I hope you're doing better on your resolutions than I am on this one. In my defense (or maybe I'm just trying to justify my lateness) I have been busy. The schedule this month has been staying quite full. (Don't worry, we'll still make room for you!) In addition though I've been busy fixing leaking water lines (yes more, but not the ones I fixed this past summer) and getting electrical lines run and lights installed in the stalls for the horses.
Over the holidays we got a chance to catch up with friends it seems we only see at Christmas and New Year's parties. We hope that you shared good times with family or friends as well.

9 Ways to Reduce Stress by Simplifying Your Style
|
By Brad Paul
The desire to reduce stress is a
common goal for most people. We are so entrenched in our routines, habits, and
ways of doing things we rarely stop and consider new ways of dealing with the
stresses of daily living.
By simplifying your style, you are setting up how you are going to respond to
stress creating events in advance. In other words, you are making a decision
based on your desire to reduce stress in your life.
Your goal is to set up new ways of handling issues that bring about stress
because of the negative emotions that they create. Here are 9 areas where you
can simplify your style and in doing so reduce stress.
1. Stop Arguing
Arguing is a waste of time. No one ever wins. If you win an argument, the other
person feels slighted and annoyed by you. If you lose, you feel this way about
them.
Simplify your style into being a person who does not argue. You do this because
you recognize the senselessness of arguing and your desire to reduce stress in
your life.
2. Stop Giving Your Unsolicited Opinion
Closely related to arguing is the compulsion to give your opinion when you
haven't been asked for it. People instantly become resistant and defensive when
someone gives their unsolicited opinion.
There's a fine line between giving your opinion and offering a suggestion in a
situation where some serious damage might occur. In these situations, I have
found that asking carefully worded questions about the issue of concern works
best.
Simplify your style into being a person who doesn't give your opinion unless
you're asked for it emphatically. You do this to improve your relationships and
reduce stress in your body.
3. Stop Reacting When Others Speak
Angrily
When people talk angrily about something, our tenancy is to react to their
anger by getting tight, defensive, and stressed. Unless the anger is directed
at us, there is no logical reason to react this way.
You are not responsible for the other person's anger, and no one else is responsible
for causing or getting rid of your anger. If someone insists on vocalizing
their anger about something, don't allow yourself to be drawn into it.
Modify your style into being a person who does not react to another person's
anger. You do this because you know that it will reduce stress in your body and
protect your health.
4. Stop Requiring Perfection of
Yourself & Others
Perfection is an impossible objective. In reality, the drive for perfection
gets in the way of creativity.
Giving up the need for perfection is a clear-cut way to reduce stress. Simplify
your style into being a person who doesn't require perfection by knowing that
it's a fool's quest.
5. Stop Trying to Please Everyone
Trying to please everyone is insanity. If you consider all the variations of
personalities and likes and dislikes of people, it should be obvious that
trying to please everyone is impossible and a waste of time.
If you were to just focus on pleasing yourself, the other people around you
would reap the benefits because you'd be more fun to be around. If you are
constantly in a frenzy trying to please everyone around you, it's unlikely that
you'll be in good spirits.
Modify your style into being a person who does not try to please everyone. You
do this because you know it will lift the weight of the world off your
shoulders and reduce stress in many areas of your social life.
6. Stop Trying to Make Everyone Like
You
Do you like everyone you meet? No one does. Knowing this, why should you expect
everyone to like you?
Many of us have the most trouble with this when it comes to family and friends.
The hard truth is that sometimes your relationship will certain individuals
will never be as close as you want or need. What's the answer? Find other
people to achieve the closest you desire.
When we join a group that participates in an area that we identify with
strongly we expect to have an easier time of getting along with the members. In
many respects, you will, but personality differences will still be factor. If
you join an organization with broader objectives like a fitness club as opposed
to a vegetarian group, you may find more people that you get along with well.
Simplify your style into being a person who does not try to make everyone like
you, but rather a person who relies on just being yourself. You do this because
you understand the impossibility of making everyone like you and to reduce
stress in your social activities.
7. Stop Grieving About Past Mistakes
Grieving about mistakes you've made in the past is a clear waste of time. The
only possible outcome is that you'll feel depressed in the present! And when
you feel depressed, you greatly reduce your ability to take constructive action
today that will improve your future.
If we hope to make the most of the present, we must be in the best possible
state of mind. To do that we must keep our focus in the moment and on what we
want to experience. When we think about the things we want, we bring about
positive feelings that will energize us rather than depress us.
Adjust your style into being a person who doesn't grieve about mistakes in the
past but rather rejoices in what you have today and what you intend to manifest
in the future. You do this because you know that by not grieving about past
mistakes you reduce stress and increase the likelihood of positive results in
the future.
8. Stop Worrying About What Might
Happen in the Future
By worrying about what might happen in the future, we actually create the
conditions for manifesting it. Most things we worry about never come true.
According to the Law of Attraction, it takes a lot more negative thoughts to
bring about bad results than it does to manifest positive outcomes. This
explains for me why most of what we worry about never comes true. Worry is a waste
of time. It's also very damaging to your physical and mental health.
Simplify your style into being a person who doesn't worry about what might
happen in the future, but rather a person who imagines living the future that
they desire in the present. You do this because you know that according to the
Law of Attraction, you bring about what you think about and it will reduce
stress in your body and life.
9. Stop Researching & Analyzing So
Much and Start Doing
Researching and analyzing things in order to make the best possible decision is
a good practice if it leads to a timely decision to act! If the research and
analysis goes too far and decisions are postponed, this is a stress-producing
problem.
The person who does no research makes decisions blindly, so little courage is
required. The person who researches and analyzes things to nth degree usually
lacks the courage to make decisions. The person who does a predetermined amount
of research and analysis, makes timely decisions based the information at hand
and their gut feelings, which requires considerable courage. The best practice
then is to model your style after the people in the center of the continuum.
Modify your style in being a person who does a predetermined amount of research
and analysis and then makes a timely decision based on the information
gathered, gut feelings, and courage! You do this because you know that it will
reduce stress and improve your productivity.
If you think about the people in your life you admire, many of them probably
have the style that I am encouraging. This style will reduce stress, enhance
your health, and earn respect from others.

Water and Our Bodies
|
What is the
most obvious characteristic of water?
That's right--it's fluid; water moves!
Trickling in streams, rushing in rivers, slowly moving through lakes and
even moving in currents and tides in our oceans and seas. Heated it dissipates in the air as steam and
frozen it ever so slowly creeps across the mountainous landscape as
glaciers. It is water's nature to
move. When it doesn't move it is
stagnate and becomes a breeding ground for disease spreading organisms.
The human
body is composed of between 55 and 65 percent water. (The variation is due to the amount of
adipose [fat] tissue. More adipose
equals less water.) Due to this large
percentage of water comprising our bodies, there is a valid parallel we can
draw: if healthy water is fluid (i.e. moving), then a moving human body will be
healthier than a sedentary one. Basic
human anatomy confirms this. Our bodies
are designed to be erect and in motion. Exercise physiology also bears this out. When we move enough (adequate exercise) our
muscles remain strong and supple. When
we don't move (or we don't move enough) our muscles begin to atrophy and lose
tone making movement more difficult creating a downward spiral of more
inactivity.
While we
are designed to be erect and in motion most of us find ourselves sitting for
long periods of time at our desks at work and in front of the computer or TV at
home. Stress also factors into this
equation. Since stress causes
constriction of tissue it too results in less ability to move. Stress creates tension headaches, tight
muscles and stiff joints-all lack of movement issues!
What must
we do? Become more like our primary
component-water. Learn to move and move freely. You don't have to go to the gym to exercise
or become a triathlete; walk, dance, stretch, play. Get up from the couch, the desk, the table,
and move!
If it's
been awhile since you were active your body will resist this "new concept of
movement." But keep going, just as water
doesn't have a channel to run in the first time it flows over new terrain (but
it quickly creates one), with continued effort movement becomes easier, more
natural and more comfortable. You will
soon begin to feel the freedom of movement that we see in children.
