Some Simple Do's & Don'ts for 2010

· Eat less beef.  It's better for you and better for the environment.  Buy only organic or grass-fed beef.

· Use less plastic, especially where your food and water are concerned.  I like to use a stainless- steel water bottle by klean kanteen.  They now make insulated bottles you can take to your coffee place and use instead of paper cups!

· Take care of your teeth and gums.  Many people don't realize that oral-bacteria buildup can lead to heart disease.  Floss!

· Get your vitamin D level and C-reactive protein tested next time you go to the doctor.  Many of us are deficient in vitamin D which helps with immunity, cancer prevention and all sorts of important things.  (If you find you need to boost your vitamin D, here's the one I like best.)  CRP is a measure of systemic inflammation.  If yours is high, you'll want to make some lifestyle changes.

·  Don't drink cold drinks or add ice to your beverages unless it's noon in July.  Help keep your digestive fire (agni) strong to stave off disease.  A little ginger tea every once in a while can't hurt either.

·  Get rid of the coffee (slowly, so you won't have headaches).  We have enough stress in our lives, why do you need to put your nervous system artificially into "fight or flight" mode?  Black and green teas have more than enough caffeine plus the bonus of antioxidants.  These are my faves:
matcha (use a tiny bit), organic green with citrus, rose-scented black.

· Make lunch your biggest meal of the day.  It's better for your metabolism and especially good if weight loss is a goal.

·  Try controlling your breath to alleviate stress and stress-related disorders.  It's really as simple as closing your eyes, taking a deep inhalation and exhalation through the nose three times in a row.

· Don't blow your nose when you have a cold.  Blowing your nose to alleviate stuffiness is second nature but it evidently does no good. Blowing reverses the flow of mucus into the sinuses and slows drainage.  If you must, blow each nostril separately.

·  If you don't exercise now, you should start.  Here's why:  Exercise curbs your risk of cancer. Exercise creates new brain cells. Exercise boosts insulin sensitivity which decreases the risk of heart disease and type-two diabetes. You're never too old to build muscle. Exercise prevents visceral fat gain which is linked to insulin resistance, heart disease and diabetes.

·  Don't eat these foods:  canned tomatoes (the tomato acid leaches bisphenol-A from the can lining.  not good.), corn-fed beef (cows eat grass. end of story.), microwave popcorn (cancer-causing chemicals in the lining of the bag are released when heated), non-organic potatoes and other root vegetables (they're treated with herbicides, pesticides and fungicides, oh my!),  farmed salmon (they're raised in disgusting conditions, fed disgusting things and, guess what? they contain all sorts of bad-for-you stuff.), milk produced with artificial hormones (it may increase your cancer risk), conventional apples (they contain more pesticides than any other crop).

·  What should you eat?  These foods all have been shown to possess strong health benefits:  raw honey, blueberries, wild salmon, green tea (see above), broccoli, walnuts, turmeric, pomegranate and dark chocolate.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Crain's Article About Moi
Crain's Chicago Business recently wrote a nice article about me!  Click here to see it.  I'm not photogenic, don't hold it against me.  Keep picturing me as a supermodel and we'll all be fine.

Assorted Things You Should Know

·  KK Ayurveda Product News

I've changed the packaging for the Anti-Aging Serum and it's now easier to use.

I've replaced the Antioxidant Treatment with a better product, Geranium, Rosewood & Berries Antioxidant Lotion.  It's a great weightless treatment product with terrific ingredients like cranberry extract, wild blueberry extract, red raspberry extract, vitamin C and rosehip seed oil.

·  COMING SOON!  Energy-Balancing Treatment (Marma Chikitsa)
I'm developing a hands-on, in-office treatment that's relaxing, rejuvenating and energizing.  I'll use my fingertips and palms to stimulate therapeutic points (marmas) on your body.  Essential oils like lavender, sandalwood, lemon, orange, eucalyptus and ginger will be hand-picked and incorporated into each treatment.  You stay fully clothed, lie down on my massage table and breathe!  Here's more information.

·  Tejas Yoga Studio
Tejas Yoga was featured twice recently in Time Out Chicago magazine.  Once for it's men-only yoga class and once for being a hot new studio.    They also have a new website where you can sign up and pay for classes online--so convenient.  check it out!

·  If You Like To Chant...
My favorite kirtan wallah, Bhagavan Das, is coming to Yoga Now Gold Coast on January 30 and 31st.  Kirtan is call-and-response chanting (usually in Sanskrit and generally repetition of the various names of the Divine).  Baba doesn't come here often so this is a rare treat.  If you have even the slightest interest in chanting, you must come see him!
