Ethical Eating:  Food Has Gotten So Confusing!

A couple of weeks ago, I read an article about adding fish to one's diet and how this may ward off strokes and dementia.  This got me thinking, of course, about ways in which I could add more fish to my diet.  This in turn got me thinking about salmon:  both the warnings of mercury-toxicity and the benefits of wild-caught salmon over farm-raised salmon.  This in turn got me thinking about how complicated food has become.

Guess I'm not the only one feeling this way as New York magazine did a feature story called, "Eat Good:  What's okay to buy, cook, or order anymore? A soup-to-nuts guide to dining with a clean conscience."

Quoting here:
"Beyond the enduring concerns about calories, artificial ingredients, and, of course, taste, there are now a host of politically minded food anxieties. Is the chicken free-range? Is the salad from a labor-friendly farm? Was the coffee shade-grown? Sometimes it seems the future of the planet is riding on your hamburger. While it's wise (and often delicious!) to maintain a healthy skepticism about too much food-correctness, it's not a bad idea to do your part where you can."

It's a great article because it covers various popular food items and tells you the issues related to the ways in which that food is grown, raised, harvested or processed (things like genetically modified, big carbon footprint, overfarming, natural resource depletion, unfair labor practices, etc. ) and gives you better alternatives.  Many of the solutions are New-York-centric but there's still plenty  of helpful information for everyone.

For instance, I generally try to stay away from soy because it's heavily pesticided and often genetically modified.  Now I know that if a soy product is USDA-certified organic, it can't contain genetic modifications.  Good to know!
