April School of Prayer

Features Dick Eastman

2-6 p.m. in Higher Grounds Café, Mesa

Sunday, April 22

Dick EastmanFrom international venues that have taken him around the world to every continent more than 100 times, to Central's School of Prayer in the Higher Grounds Café, Mesa, Sunday, April 22, Dr. Dick Eastman proclaims the Word of God and the power of prayer wherever he goes.

He is international president of Every Home for Christ (EHC) and the president of America's National Prayer Committee (ANPC). His vision for greater cooperation in Christ's Body for unified evangelism strategies globally has given birth to The Jericho Center for Global Evangelism in Colorado Springs.

EHC is a 65-year-old ministry that has planted over 3 billion gospel messages home to home in 215 nations resulting in over 106 million followed-up decisions and responses.

The goal of EHC staff, including 4,000 workers and 30,000 volunteers, is to reach 200,000 homes a day with the Gospel. The ANPC is responsible for the National Day of Prayer here in the U.S.

Because certain areas of the world are virtually closed to Christian outreach, Dick originated and developed the multi-hour "Change the World School of Prayer" as part of EHC's especially strong prayer mobilization effort.

Joni Eareckson Tada considers Dick her prayer mentor and says, "God has used Dick Eastman to ignite the power of prayer in my life."

Among his book titles, some of which have sold over 3 million copies, are: "Intercessory Worship," "The Purple Pig and Other Miracles," "No Easy Road: Inspirational Thoughts on Prayer," and "Love on Its Knees."

Central's School of Prayer happens quarterly and often features well-known prayer authors and speakers like Dick.  Registration is requested for preparation of materials and snacks, but there is no cost.

Spotlight on Half Day of Prayer

Rick Safriet has led people up Usery Mountain one morning a month for three years now. Why?

To get alone with God. To spend time with Him. To talk. To listen. To pray.

During one of his own times alone with God for a Half Day of Prayer, Rick got such a clear message about something he was praying about. He took time apart, read from God's Word, and discovered a surprising message. He wasn't supposed to go on a trip he had already signed up for, totally with a heart for God and His people in mind.

But there it was, in the Scripture he read while asking about the trip and God's purpose in it. It said to turn back and not go, he said.  So, obediently, he told Paul Covert he couldn't go on the trip.

Instead, another man went in his place and while on that trip, decided it was time for him to get baptized!  For that alone, Rick said, he was glad he had stepped aside and not gone on the trip. But there was more.

Had he been gone, he would not have been able to be there for his wife, Linda, when her father fell gravely ill and was taken to the hospital. Again, Rick was so grateful for the message he would never have heard had he not taken the time apart to listen.

"Half Day of Prayer just offers everyone the chance to experience a deeper connection with God," Rick said.

The morning includes time for participants to be alone to read Scripture or walk and talk with God or just sit and listen and watch for God in His creation around them on the mountainside.  It also then offers a time to debrief with others on the Half Day about what God was saying and doing during that time with them.

He cautions, though, it's best if you don't do it just once. "That won't do it justice," he said.  Try it three or four times in a row to get into a rhythm of the full sense of what it is like to spend a half a day with God.

Prayer Team Offers Life Group Study

 Bible Study

For a fun, challenging, Biblical, and personal study for your Life Group, try the Prayer Team's eight-week Bible Study on Prayer. It's brand new, but already proving very popular with Life Groups. For now, it comes complete with the engaging author and developer of the study himself.

When Paul and Cathy noted that many Life Groups were asking each of them to come and speak on prayer for a week or two at a time, often wanting even more, the concept was born. That's when Paul met with Prayer Team leader, Andy Moore, and asked if he would be willing to build an eight-week study to take to the Life Groups. They compared notes and came to what they felt would be the high points over eight sessions.

Then Andy went to work, drawing on Paul's vast notes and Andy's experiences as a staff member with Campus Crusade and years of studying God's Word himself.

The result has now been tested out with several Life Groups of varying ages, experience, and knowledge of prayer. And the verdict is in: it's great. Andy is in demand now, and hasn't had a week off  between his last three Life Groups.  He's even talking about training Cathy and others to take the study to more groups as requests keep coming in.

"I personally love getting into the Word and talking with different people about these topics on prayer," Andy said. With each of the eight topics, Andy lets God's Word take participants to the understanding of what God had in mind. "It leads to discussions that can be on point or off, but always interesting," he said.

PRAYER POWER APPLIED TO REACH AGREEMENT ON POWER  RATES

Power is a big expenditure for many manufacturing companies and when it comes to producing aluminum, the increasing cost of power alone can force the manufacturer to close up shop. In Goose Creek, South Carolina, Alcoa employees removed their hardhats and bowed their heads in prayer, hoping that an agreement on power rates will be reached in time to save their jobs. PRAYER IN SCHOOL AND TIMES OF TRAGEDY

As the debates about prayer in the schools continue and laws are tested in the courts, the nation and the people of Chardon mourn the tragic shootings at Chardon High.  A blog from Todd Starnes with FoxNews.com headlines a provocative question regarding school prayer in times of tragedy. However, when reading articles about school and prayer, keep in mind that although public prayer is not sanctioned by public schools, many of those who teach there would welcome our prayers for them.  Read the blog.

SOME BACKGROUND ON THE FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPH "GRACE"

You may have seen the famous photograph of the elderly, white-bearded man praying over a small loaf of bread and bowl of soup. Replicas of this hand-colored photograph seemed to be everywhere in the 1960s and 70s.  When Rhoda Nyberg, the artist who colored the photograph, passed away in late February of 2012, the Boston Globe published her obituary and included a little background information about the photograph.  The photograph, which was taken by her father, has gently reminded many a diner to pause and give thanks before eating.  Read more and see the picture.
