Devastation in Joplin Hits Home

Covert Home
Scene inside Paul's parent's home after tornado's destruction.

Paul Covert's parents, in their 80s, have survived the tornado that ripped through Joplin, MO., last month. Only a couple years ago did God put it on their hearts that they should build a storm cellar on the farm that has been in their family for 100 years.

When word came of a powerful tornado headed their way in just minutes, they took off for that storm cellar, and God used it to spare their lives!

When they came back out, they discovered the roof of the farmhouse, built by Paul's great-grandfather, was torn off.  The tornado also sucked up the ceiling of the first floor but left many of the walls still standing and the home open to the wind and rains.  The barns were gone and the garage, ruined. Some of their belongings have been spotted on fence rows half a mile away. Some of their cattle had to be euthanized because trees had fallen on them or they had been injured in other ways during the storm which posted winds more than 200 miles per hour.  Read More Here

Prayers Answered Amidst

Pain and Loss

Karen Weekly remembers the phone call. It was August 6, 2010, and came from a hospital chaplain in Indianapolis telling her that their son Kurt had been critically injured in an accident. She asked, "On his motorcycle?" and he said, "Yes."

Karen was home alone. Her husband Gary was at the Leadership Summit Conference and not answering his cell phone. She had to drive to Central and find Gary in order to tell him. The chaplain called one more time, strongly urging that they get there as soon as possible.

Friends from Karen's Bible study were contacted to begin praying. One friend immediately came over to offer help and another phoned to donate miles on US Air. She was able to get seats on a flight to Indianapolis that would arrive in Indy at 1:30 a.m. Before they got there, Kurt was already in surgery, but they didn't know for what.  Read More Here

SpotlightSeeking to Serve

When Jon Baillie first started attending Central on a regular basis in 2009, he came with the thought in the back of his mind, "How can I serve here?" He could see that this church had much to offer, and he was being served by the church, so he wanted to reciprocate. He helped out here and there with various things, always keeping his eyes open for that one thing that would be a good fit for him, something that he could commit to.

Then one day he read the fine print in a prayer newsletter. "I don't even remember how I started receiving the prayer newsletter. I don't remember signing up for it," Jon said. But he noticed down at the bottom of the page a modest sentence, in small type: We're looking for help if anyone has time.

Even though it was not in his reserved nature to initiate a contact like this, God prompted him to respond to this simple plea for help. Jon emailed Paul Covert to find out what kind of help he was looking for; they met, Paul layed out the tasks, and Jon agreed to come on board. Read More Here
