2011 Conference Speakers Have the "Write" Stuff!
Did you know that both of the main speakers for the 2011 Prayer Conference are accomplished authors?
Mark Batterson |
Mark has written three books - "In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day," "Primal," and "Wild Goose Chase."
"Our best days often start out as our worst days. And our greatest opportunities are often disguised as our biggest problems. You can land in a pit with a lion on a snowy day, and it will seem like the end of the road. But God is in the recycling business. He recycles past experiences and uses them to prepare us for future opportunities. That is the story of my life. And that is the story of your life. Look in the rearview mirror long enough and you'll see that God has purposely positioned you everywhere you've been-even when it seemed you'd taken a wrong turn." -Mark Batterson
Great at the Great Commandment
Primal is more than a book. It's a movement waiting to happen.
Christianity has a perception problem. At the heart of the problem is the simple fact that Christians are more known for what we're against than what we're for. But the real problem isn't perception. We as Christians are often quick to point out what's wrong with our culture. And we certainly need the moral courage to stand up for what's right in the face of what's wrong. But before confronting what's wrong with our culture, we need to be humble enough, honest enough, and courageous enough to repent of what's wrong with us.
So what's wrong with us?
The answer is simply this: We're not great at the Great Commandment. And in too many instances, we're not even good at it.
That, I believe, is our primal problem. That is the lost soul of Christianity. If Jesus said that loving God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength is the most important commandment, then doesn't it logically follow that we ought to spend an inordinate amount of our time and energy trying to understand it and obey it? We can't afford to be merely good at the Great Commandment. We've got to be great at the Great Commandment.
The quest for the lost soul of Christianity begins with rediscovering what it means to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Celtic Christians had a name for the Holy Spirit-An Geadh-Glas, or 'the Wild Goose.' The name hints at mystery. Much like a wild goose, the Spirit of God cannot be tracked or tamed. An element of danger, an air of unpredictability surround Him. And while the name may sound a little sacrilegious, I cannot think of a better description of what it's like to follow the Spirit through life. I think the Celtic Christians were on to something... Most of us will have no idea where we are going most of the time. And I know that is unsettling. But circumstantial uncertainty also goes by another name: Adventure
Bob Bakke has written "The Power of Extraordinary Prayer."
That there is power in prayer is undeniable. More than just communication or communion with God, it is a union with Him. Through prayer we pour our lives, our longings, into God and receive His character, mind, and authority in return. When we gather with fellow believers for prayer, as we are taught in Matthew 18, our hearts are joined together in God's divine purpose. This is the very wisdom and power of the church. Yet such extraordinary prayer is something too few Christians understand, and therefore rarely practice.
Like many Christian leaders past and present, Robert Bakke believes that the effectiveness of the church's ministry is dependent upon this type of prayer. The evidence from history is clear. Time and time again, when Christians of all denominations unite as one body with one purpose, God moves. Thousands of people commit or rededicate their lives to Christ, missionaries rise up, and revival sweeps across geographic lines.
In telling the stories of history's awakenings and the praying believers behind them, Bakke will stir in your heart a vision for similar revival. And the lessons he brings forth from biblical examples reveal how such renewal can happen again today. Though Bakke's passion for prayer is clear, his work is a powerful reminder that it is God who calls us, privately and corporately, to pray. |
Central Hosts 2 Events on the National Day of Prayer
Night of Worship Tour On May 6 Central played host to Matt Maher, Phil Wickham and Leeland as they presented their Night of Worship tour. The tour coincided with the National Day of Prayer, and the host for the evening opened in prayer, reminding all of us to pray for our nation, our leaders and our troups fighting in foreign lands to protect our freedom.
We were reminded of many things by the performers. Matt Maher reminded us to protect our spiritual hearts against the hardness of indifference. Phil Wickam encouraged us to share our lives with others, and Leeland shared their concern for the people of the world living in poverty and ignorance to Jesus Christ.
The concert was a sell-out. Most of the crowd represented the local Phoenix area, but there were also those who came from Flagstaff, Tucson and some from California and New Mexico.
It was an enlightening opportunity to share the purpose of praise with people of diverse backgrounds and denominations. It truly was a time when all of God's children, regardless of religious preference and disciplines, came together to blend as one in praise and worship for our God.
LIFT Concert of Prayer
The prayer ministry, led by Rick Safriet and Cathy Cryer, met in prayer to lift up our nation before our Lord. There were a dozen people who met to pray, and all were in agreement with the prayer session. Prayer focused on our church, CCCEV, and its leadership. Prayer was offered for our pastors, staff and congregation that we seek God's guidance and His will for us as a part of the body of Christ during these difficult economic times, to trust in Him and His promises to meet our needs when we do what He asks us to do. Prayer continued for all churches to find a way to unite as we have been asked to do by God, as one body in Christ rather than individual denominations seeking to further our agendas. There was prayer time in confession where many were moved by the Spirit to speak of things that had haunted them for some time, and to share with others who are concerned and love people for who and where we are in life, not what we thing they should be. The session was closed in prayer for our nation and our leaders. Many expressed concern that our nation has become a nation of legality and secularism and have abandoned justice and doing what is right in the eyes of God. The LIFT session is normally scheduled for an hour. The session started at 7:00 pm and ended about 8:45 pm.
LIFT meets every Wednesday on the Gilbert campus and every Thurday on the Mesa campus. Please pray and seek God's guidance in attending either of the prayer sessions. |

Ministry Spotlight
Did you realize that 35 or so people are involved in the E-accountability groups at Central? These are cool groups for men or women who are growing and sharing with each other online.
Here is how it works:
You commit yourself to reading the Bible 15 minutes each day, praying 15 minutes each day, praying with your spouse (if you have one) 3 times a week, exercising 3 times a week, praying for your neighborhood once a month, praying corporately once a month, and reading 20 pages in a Christian book each week. Then each Saturday you get an email asking you to fill out your weekly report. Then your report goes to the others in the group who help encourage you. I think all of the members would say the e-group has helped them grow and made a huge impact on their disciplines. Are you interested in joining? Prayer Ministry Needs
We continue to need admin help. Can you give 2 or 3 hours one day a week? Can you spell and do you have command of a computer. If so then you are just what we need. Please contact Paul.Covert@cccev.com |
24/7 Prayer Dates Confirmed
We are very excited about this year's 24-7. If you are new to the 24-7's here is how it works. We set up 10 stations on each campus and invite the church to come to the stations for prayer. We have hundreds of people, couples, families, and small groups who select a time and come to pray for one hour. Every year we hear of people who are afraid they can't pray for an hour and end up praying for much more because of the relaxed and comfortable way prayer is directed. We will be taking our prayer stations from the Sermon of Jesus on the Mount. The Dates have now been confirmed Nov 13-17 in Mesa and 17-20 in Gilbert.
Please put this event on your calendar now. This is a can't be missed event.
