On the Town Common,
Saturdays, 9:30 - 1:30

October 30, 2010

Dear :

This Saturday is the last outdoor market on the common this year! But don't forget to also attend the special indoor market on November 20 (held at the Parish of the Epiphany, 9:30-1:30), which will be a great opportunity to buy local foods and produce right before Thanksgiving as well as to get a start on holiday shopping. Most of the regular market farmers and vendors will be at the indoor market, as well as several artists from the Winchester Artists Network.

The market is excited to again welcome Chef Barbara Lynch for a cooking demonstration and book signing. If you missed her appearance at the market earlier this season, you will have another chance! At 11:00 am, Chef Lynch will be demonstrating a squash salad and providing samples of chestnut bisque. After the demonstration, she will be signing copies of her new cookbook, Stir: Mixing It Up in the Italian Tradition, which will be available for purchase at the market from BookEnds.

At 1:00 pm, a drawing will be held for the raffle winner of the market-themed quilt handmade and generously donated by the Winchester Artists Network. You can still get raffle tickets at the market manager's tent before the drawing.

The Winchester Friends of Art will sponsor a mask decorating activity during the market this week and have information available about their upcoming events.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of Winchester will be at the market selling pies as a sponsor of Pie in the Sky, Community Servings' annual Thanksgiving fundraiser. Restaurants, caterers, and bakers in the Greater Boston area are generously donating 13,000 pies, and each pie purchased will help Community Servings provide a week's worth of home-delivered meals to a neighbor struggling with a critical illness such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, or MS who is too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

La Patisserie will be at the market this week selling their delicious cupcakes and other bakery item, Bistro 5 will be selling ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads.

Check the farmers market website for additional information about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions, and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and the rotating business, food, and community group tents. Visit the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities.

Remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.

We look forward to seeing you on the common on Saturday.

Sincerely,
Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

Chef Barbara Lynch Cooking Demonstration and Tasting

The farmers market is excited to again welcome Barbara Lynch for a cooking demonstration and book signing. If you missed her appearance at the market earlier this season, you will have another chance! At 11:00 am, Chef Lynch will be demonstrating a squash salad and providing samples of chestnut bisque. After the demonstration, she will be signing copies of her new cookbook, Stir: Mixing It Up in the Italian Tradtion, which will be available for purchase at the market from BookEnds.

James Beard Award-winner Barbara Lynch is regarded as one of Boston's, and the country's, leading chefs and restaurateurs. She grew up in South Boston, and during her early twenties worked with Chef Todd English. After working with Todd for several years, Barbara traveled to Italy where she learned about Italian cuisine firsthand from local women. She returned to Boston and became the executive chef at Galleria Italiana, bringing national acclaim to the tiny trattoria when she captured Food & Wine's "Ten Best New Chefs in America" award.

In 1998, Barbara opened No. 9 Park, which immediately received rave review from publications around the country and was named one of the "Top 25 New Restaurants in America" by Bon Appétit and "Best New Restaurant" by Food & Wine. She has since opened eight other restaurants and culinary enterprises, including B&G Oysters, The Butcher Shop, and most recently Menton.

Barbara and her restaurants and recipes continue to received numerous prestigious awards and be featured in many publications including Saveur, Boston Common, Appétit, The New York Times, and Inc. magazine. She was one of handful of Bostonians to be profiled in the ABC-TV documentary series "Boston 24/7" and is the subject of a documentary film entitled "Amuse Bouche--A Chef's Tale." In 2009, Barbara was honored to receive the Crittenton Women's Union's Amelia Earheart Award. Past recipients include Doris Kearns Goodwin and Julia Child.

Barbara's first cookbook, Stir, Mixing It Up in The Italian Tradition, was published in fall 2009 and immediately earned praise among both media and home cooks and received a prestigious Gourmand award for "Best Chef Cookbook" for the United States.
