On the Town Common,
Saturdays, 9:30 - 1:30

October 23, 2010

Dear :

Only two more weeks of the outdoor market on the common this year! But don't forget to also attend the special indoor market on November 20 (held at the Parish of the Epiphany, 9:30-1:30), which will be a great opportunity to buy local foods and produce right before Thanksgiving as well as to get a start on holiday shopping.

The cooking demonstration at the market this week is by Despina Makredes, an experienced caterer and culinary arts educator. She will be making a butternut squash appetizer and an apple dessert and will have small bites for tasting. Lori Gagne Shaefer from Pairings will provide information about food and wine pairing classes.

Mark your calendars for October 30, when Chef Barbara Lynch will return to the market for a cooking demonstration and book signing. If you missed her previous appearance at the market, you will have another chance!

This week and next week, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of Winchester will be at the market selling pies as a sponsor of Pie in the Sky, Community Servings' annual Thanksgiving fundraiser. Restaurants, caterers, and bakers in the Greater Boston area are generously donating 13,000 pies, and each pie purchased will help Community Servings provide a week's worth of home-delivered meals to a neighbor struggling with a critical illness such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, or MS who is too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

La Patisserie will be at the market this week selling their delicious cupcakes, Bistro 5 will be selling ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads, and the market will again be grilling fresh corn generously donated by E. L. Silvia Farm.

Don't forget to stop by the market manager's tent to enter the raffle for the market-themed quilt handmade and generously donated by the Winchester Artists Network.

Check the farmers market website for additional information about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions, and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and the rotating business, food, and community group tents. Visit the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities.

Remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.

We look forward to seeing you on the common on Saturday.

Sincerely,
Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

 Volunteer at the Market

We need volunteers this week (and every week) to help with the farmers market, especially for setup before the market between 8:30 and 9:30 and takedown after the market between 1:30 and 2:30. If you are able to help, please sign up at our online signup sheet to let us know when you are coming.

Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help. Your assistance is especially important in keeping the market running smoothly, and we appreciate everything you do!
