On the Town Common, Saturdays, 9:30 - 1:30
|
Winchester's third annual environmental fair will be held alongside the farmers market this Saturday, October 16 from 9:30 to 3:00. Be sure to visit all of the interesting exhibitors and events at the fair while you are on the common at the market! The fair will also include several lectures taking place inside the First Congregational Church. Bring your kitchen knives and garden tools to be sharpened by Siraco Sharpening Service. Their van will be parked on Laraway Road. The market will be filled with opportunities for delicious food this week. In addition to the seasonal produce and locally produced foods from our regular farmers and vendors, La Patisserie will join the market this week selling their delicious cupcakes, Bistro 5 will be selling ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads, and the market will again be grilling fresh corn generously donated by E. L. Silvia Farm.
Don't forget to stop by the market manager's tent to enter the raffle for the market-themed quilt handmade and generously donated by the Winchester Artists Network. Mark your calendars for the special indoor market on November 20, which will be a great opportunity to buy local foods and produce right before Thanksgiving as well as to get a start on holiday shopping.
Check the farmers market website for additional information about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions, and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and the rotating business, food, and community group tents. Visit the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities.
Remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.
We look forward to seeing you on the common on Saturday.
Sincerely, Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

Denise Costello of The Energized Body, who started the farmers market series Farm to Table, will talk about how vegetarian diets are not only good for our health but also for our earth. This week, she will feature a harvest veggie soup and pumpkin muffins during her demonstration at 11:30.
Robin Cohen of Doves and Figs will demonstrated canning and freezing from 10:00 to 1:00. Stop by the Doves and Figs table and pick up pickle and jam recipes and find out more about Robin's easy and fun canning classes and presentations on local food. Her prize winning pickles that took top honors at the Topsfield Fair this year will be on display.

Environmental Fair
| |
The Environmental Fair is in its third year held in conjunction with the Winchester Farmers Market on the Winchester Town Common. This year the Fair will be on Saturday, October 16, 9:30am - 3:00pm.
Be sure to vote on submissions to the fair's Photo Essay Contest. Submissions from middle school and high school student will be on display at the fair. Fairgoers can vote for their favorite and the winning entry will be published in the Winchester Star newspaper.
The vision for the Environmental Fair is to serve as an educational resource for all aspects of the lives of the residents of Winchester and the surrounding towns: recreation, home, business, and government. There will be several components along with the various exhibitors including a lecture series, live music, bicycle safety and repair workshops, and a children's activity center. Part of the schedule includes a ceremony presenting Winchester's Climate Action Plan to the Board of Selectmen. The cross-section of the exhibitors will range from local, state, and federal government initiatives; updates from Winchester student activities; local and regional environmental groups; energy efficiency and renewable experts; recycling choices; and sustainable lifestyle choices.
As always, it's a great opportunity to bring your family to the common to listen to live music, shop for local produce, and learn about all the environmental initiatives happening in our town.
See a complete schedule of events and lectures at the Environmental Fair Website.
There is still time to sign up to volunteer to help with setup, takedown, or other activities on the day of the fair. Sign up at www.mysignup.com/environmentalfair2010.
