On the Town Common, Saturdays, 9:30 - 1:30
|
Dear :
Thanks to the hot weather this summer, heat-loving plant like melons, hot peppers, and eggplant will be in plentiful supply at the market this week.
Come enjoy the great music planned this week from the Winchester Community Music School. From 10:00 to 12:00 Linda Emmanuel will lead a special music time just for children, and from 12:15 to 1:15 Rita Wong will lead a drumming circle. Bring your percussion instruments and join in!
Thank you to the customers who have used our system for advance ordering from participating farmers and other vendors. Try out advance ordering when you have a busy Saturday scheduled or when rain is predicted or to be sure you get an item that might sell out. Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions about advance ordering. Check the farmers market website for additional information about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions, and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and the rotating business, food, and community group tents. Visit the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities.
Remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.
We look forward to seeing you on the common on Saturday.
Sincerely, Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

| Featured Artist: Betty Stone | | Visit the Winchester Artists Network tent this week to see the work of Betty Stone. In February 1996, bjstone cards was born when Betty began marketing her stunning original photograph note cards. "The first flower series was photographed at Lilac Sunday at the Arnold Arboretum. I decided to share them as gifts for my friends." Betty's Lilac Sunday series is still a standard at the Arboretum gift shop.
While bjstone cards initially made its splash with close-up shots of colorful blooms found in local gardens, the collection today is comprised of more than 600 compositions, including flowers, architectural details, food, animals, and other subjects which attract the photographer's attention because of their color, texture or whimsy. "Flowers, windows, and doors are great subjects - they are plentiful, patient, forgiving, and generally good-humored."
The line includes matted prints in 4" x 6" format as well as enlargements, and triptychs related by theme and color. Recent pieces reflect Betty's interest in quilting and "deconstructing" images. Originally a film photographer, Betty currently works in digital format. All images are available in the size that works for you!
Betty's work is currently on display at 13FORESTgallery in East Arlington, the Arnold Arboretum gift shop, and Winchester Stained Glass. She has exhibited at Winchester Artists' Network events, the Arlington Center for the Arts (Heart of the Arts and Holiday Fairs); the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park Art in the Park Festival; Book Ends; the (former) Barnes Gallery in West Medford; and The Eliot School Holiday Fair, and at open houses, where she especially enjoys sharing the stories of her photographs with friends. Betty is a member of Locally Grown, a collective of Boston-area artists, and the Winchester Artists Network. |
Vegetable Garden Tour of Winchester
| |
The Winchester Farmers Market is sponsoring a tour of home vegetable gardens in Winchester on Sunday, August 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Whether you are a vegetable gardener yourself, or have been thinking about growing your own vegetables, or are just curious to see what other people are growing, this tour has something for everyone. Come find out what residents throughout Winchester are growing in their own backyards, ranging from small, simple gardens with a few types of vegetables to large gardens with a variety of vegetable, fruit, herbs, and flowers.
The tour is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about home vegetable gardening, and you can visit the gardens in any order you choose and at your own pace. Gardeners and volunteers from the farmers market will be available at each garden to answer questions. A children's scavenger hunt is included as part of the tour. Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet at any of the gardens and bring the completed sheet to the market manager's tent at the farmers market on August 21 for a special prize.
Tour maps are available at BookEnds starting August 9 or at the market on August 14, or click here to request a map by e-mail.

The NOFA summer conference, taking place August 13-15 at the UMass Campus in Amherst is a fun and educational event that anyone can enjoy. Attend the conference for just a day or for the entire weekend to meet like-minded people, learn about food and farming, and have fun! Farmers Market Lawn Signs
| |
A special opportunity is available to support the farmers
market during the 2010 season by displaying a lawn sign in your yard to
help promote the market. We are looking for several people who live in Winchester or
surrounding towns who would be willing to display a lawn sign on their
property from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon each week
during the market season. If you would be willing to have a sign in your
yard but do not want to have to remember to put it out every week, we
will arrange to have a volunteer put out the sign on Friday afternoon
and remove it on Saturday afternoon. All you have to do is make a few
inches of lawn space available!
If you are interested in supporting the market by displaying a
lawn
sign, stop by the market manager's tent at the market to pick up a sign. Thank you to everyone who has already agreed to display a lawn sign!

| Follow the Farmers Market on Facebook and Twitter | | Visit the farmers market Facebook page to share your photos of the market, post comments, and get updates about the market. Follow the market on Twitter to get the latest updates from the market on Saturday mornings. |
Volunteer at the Market
| |
We need volunteers this week (and every week) to help with the
farmers market, especially for setup before the market between 8:30
and 9:30 and takedown after the market between 1:30 and 2:30. If you are
able to help, please sign up at our online signup sheet to let us know when
you are coming. Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help. Your
assistance is especially important in keeping the market running
smoothly, and we appreciate everything you do!
We also have some short-term volunteer positions
to fill for the next Environmental Fair, which will be held on the town common on October 16. Be a part of this
fun, informative, and community-building event! Planning starts in July, with some of the legwork already
underway.
