On the Town Common, Saturdays, 9:30 - 1:30
|
|
Dear :
Those of you who came to the market last week got a great taste of farmers market ingredients in the grilled corn risotto prepared by Vittorio Ettore of Bistro 5. This week, the market welcomes Chris Parsons of Parsons Table in Winchester with tasting samples of cucumber gazpacho. Chef Parsons is another amazing local chef who is known for his use of local, seasonal ingredients in his delicious culinary creations. Also at the market this week: - Whiskers of Hope will have cats available for adoption.
- Soluna Garden Farm will have two kinds of popsicles available made from local, seasonal ingredients: strawberry basil popsicles made from Warner Farm organic strawberries and A-to-Z popsicles made from Hanson's Farm produce. What are A-to-Z popsicles? Stop by Soluna's tent for a free mini-popsicle sample to find out!
- Students who are volunteering their summer to take part in a program called New England Climate Summer are on a stop in Winchester as they are are riding their bikes from town to town
in Eastern Massachusetts. They are hoping to start a movement to stop the climate crisis
on a local level and will be at the market to spread awareness about their program.
- The Rotary Club of Winchester will be at the market from this week through mid-October fundraising for their Oktoberfest event.
Thank you to the customers who have used our system for advance ordering from participating farmers
and other vendors. Try out advance ordering when you have a busy Saturday scheduled or on days when rain is
predicted. Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions about advance ordering. Check the farmers market website for additional information
about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions,
and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and the rotating business, food, and community group tents. Visit
the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of
the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly
meetings, and volunteer opportunities. Remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout
the season. Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and
please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you
drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking
spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown
businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track
across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit
spaces in the end of the lot. We look forward to seeing you on the common on Saturday.
Sincerely, Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee |

Winchester High School
Comes to the Winchester Farmers Market
| | Allison Kangas'
Modern World History class has begun selling the harvest from their Victory
Garden at the Winchester Farmers Market and will continue through the summer.
Allison's tenth grade history classes started growing their Victory
Garden two years ago as a part of the studies of World War I and World War II, when Victory
Gardens were first grown. To support the war effort, people during WWI and
WWII would grow their own vegetables so food could be sent to the troops at the
front lines. With our food traveling further to reach our tables and a global
resource crisis, the Victory Garden remains relevant and patriotic today. The
WHS Victory Garden is located in the back of Winchester High School. All of the money raised will be given
to charity.

Vegetable Garden Tour of Winchester
| |
The Winchester Farmers Market is sponsoring a tour of home vegetable gardens in Winchester on Sunday, August 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Whether you are a vegetable gardener yourself, or have been thinking about growing your own vegetables, or are just curious to see what other people are growing, this tour has something for everyone. Come find out what residents throughout Winchester are growing in their own backyards, ranging from small, simple gardens with a few types of vegetables to large gardens with a variety of vegetable, fruit, herbs, and flowers.
The tour is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about home vegetable gardening, and you can visit the gardens in any order you choose and at your own pace. Gardeners and volunteers from the farmers market will be available at each garden to answer questions. A children's scavenger hunt is included as part of the tour. Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet at
any of the gardens and bring the completed sheet to the market
manager's tent at the farmers market on August 21 for a special prize.
Tour maps are available at BookEnds starting August 9 or at the
market on August 14, or request a map by e-mail to info@winchesterfarmersmarket.org.

Featured Specialty Vendor: Sweet Lolo's
| |
You may have noticed the addition to the market this year of a rotating specialty food tent to feature locally produced and handmade foods from one or two specialty vendors each week. This week, try out some of Sweet Lolo's delicious handmade candy. Laurel Siegel of Sweet Lolo's makes caramels, brittles, and other confections. She draws flavor inspirations from many sources, from friends and family, to a great meal, to ingredients she see while
strolling through a market. Most recently, Laurel has started playing with
new varieties for people with dietary restrictions, such as Goat's Milk
Caramels for people who are lactose intolerant (or who just love goat's
milk) and Vegan Caramels made with soy milk and soy margarine.
Sweet Lolo's is at the market this week and again in September, and is also a frequent vendor at the Medford Square Market on Thursday afternoons.

Farmers Market Lawn Signs
| |
A special opportunity is available to support the farmers
market during the 2010 season by displaying a lawn sign in your yard to
help promote the market. We are looking for several people who live in Winchester or
surrounding towns who would be willing to display a lawn sign on their
property from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon each week
during the market season. If you would be willing to have a sign in your
yard but do not want to have to remember to put it out every week, we
will arrange to have a volunteer put out the sign on Friday afternoon
and remove it on Saturday afternoon. All you have to do is make a few
inches of lawn space available!
If you are interested in supporting the market by displaying a
lawn
sign, stop by the market manager's tent at the market to pick up a sign. Thank you to everyone who has already agreed to display a lawn sign!

Volunteer at the Market
| |
We need volunteers this week (and every week) to help with the
farmers market, especially for setup before the market between 8:30
and 9:30 and takedown after the market between 1:30 and 2:30. If you are
able to help, please sign up at our online signup sheet to let us know when
you are coming. Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help. Your
assistance is especially important in keeping the market running
smoothly, and we appreciate everything you do!
We also have some short-term volunteer positions
to fill for the next Environmental Fair, which will be held on the town common on October 16. Be a part of this
fun, informative, and community-building event! Planning starts in July, with some of the legwork already
underway.
