On the Town Common,
Saturdays, 9:30 - 1:30

July 24, 2010
Dear :

Come to the market this week to see a cooking demonstration by Vittorio Ettore of Bistro 5 in Medford. Chef Ettore will be using local seasonal ingredients from the market to make a Gilled Corn Risotto with Arugula and Cherry Tomatoes. Learn how to make this tasty dish and try some samples! See below for more information about Chef Ettore and Bistro 5.

Thank you to the customers who have used our system for advance ordering from participating farmers and other vendors. Try out advance ordering when you have a busy Saturday scheduled or on days when rain is predicted. Let us know if you have any questions or suggestions about advance ordering.

Check the farmers market website for additional information about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions, and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and the rotating business, food, and community group tents. Visit the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities.

Remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.

We look forward to seeing you on the common on Saturday.

Sincerely,
Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

Featured Local Chef: Vittorio Ettore of Bistro 5

The market is thrilled to have Winchester resident Vittorio Ettore at the market this week demonstrating how to make Grilled Corn Risotto with Arugula and Cherry Tomatoes. He is the executive chef and owner of Bistro 5 in Medford.

Chef Ettore and farmers markets are a natural match because of his philosophy of "strive to be organic," a philosophy that applies not only to his food but to the diners' experience. Chef Ettore uses the most fresh, local, and organic ingredients at the peak of their season whenever possible. Throughout the years, Ettore has developed a unique cuisine influenced by his education and the cultures to which he has been exposed. His cuisine is primarily Italian with French, Spanish, and Asian influences. Contrast in flavor, texture and colors, food quality, variety, and presentations are evident in all of Chef Ettore's creations.

Be sure to visit Bstro 5 in September to enjoy the Heirloom Tomato Tasting Menu.  This ode to local farmers markets is an amazing tribute to the area's freshest summer ingredients. The Heirloom Tomato Tasting menu incorporates a different Heirloom Tomato component in each of the five dishes in an exciting way while keeping the menu well balanced and the flavors pitch perfect.  Bistro 5 will only be offering this tasting menu through the month of September as long as the season allows and fresh ingredients are available.

Screening of Ingredients, a Film about the Local Food Movement

The Coolidge Corner Theatre continues its Green Screens film series on Thursday, July 29 at 7:00 p.m. with a one-night only presentation of INGREDIENTS, a critically acclaimed documentary that explores the thriving local food movement.

At the center of this movement are the passionate and committed farmers and chefs who are creating a sustainable food system.  Their collaborations have resulted in healthy, great-tasting food and greater consumer awareness about the benefits of "eating local."

Attention being paid to the local food movement comes at a time when the failings of our current industrialized food system are becoming all too clear.  The environment is in jeopardy. The quality, taste, and nutritional value of the food we eat have dropped sharply over the last 50 years, while food prices have increased.  For the first time in history, today's generation of children is expected to have a shorter lifespan than that of previous generations. With food being shipped from ever-greater distances, we have lost sight of where our food comes from, losing a vital connection to our local community.

INGREDIENTS reveals how people around the country are working to bring good food back to the table and good health back to our communities. Narrated by Bebe Neuwirth, the film takes us across the United States, from the diversified farms of the Hudson River and Willamette Valleys, to the urban food deserts of Harlem, to the kitchens of celebrated chefs Alice Waters, Peter Hoffman, and Greg Higgins.

Green Screens, presented by Wainwright Bank, is a year-round film program devoted to raising audience awareness of environmental issues.  From water conservation to organic farming global warming to green architecture, this series provides and entertaining and enlightening perspective on the vital issues that are facing our planet today.

Wainwright Bank will be distributing free reusable shopping bags at the screening - great for use at your local farmers market.

Tickets ($9.75 regular admission, $6.75 seniors, free to Coolidge Corner Theatre members) are available at www.coolidge.org or at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard Street , Brookline. For more information, visit www.coolidge.org or call 617/734-2501.

Farmers Market Lawn Signs

A special opportunity is available to support the farmers market during the 2010 season by displaying a lawn sign in your yard to help promote the market. We are looking for several people who live in Winchester or surrounding towns who would be willing to display a lawn sign on their property from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon each week during the market season. If you would be willing to have a sign in your yard but do not want to have to remember to put it out every week, we will arrange to have a volunteer put out the sign on Friday afternoon and remove it on Saturday afternoon. All you have to do is make a few inches of lawn space available!

If you are interested in supporting the market by displaying a lawn sign, stop by the market manager's tent at the market to pick up a sign.

Thank you to everyone who has already agreed to display a lawn sign!

 Volunteer at the Market

We need volunteers this week (and every week) to help with the farmers market, especially for setup before the market between 8:30 and 9:30 and takedown after the market between 1:30 and 2:30. If you are able to help, please sign up at our online signup sheet to let us know when you are coming.

Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help. Your assistance is especially important in keeping the market running smoothly, and we appreciate everything you do!

We also have some short-term volunteer positions to fill for the next Environmental Fair, which will be held on the town common on October 16. Be a part of this fun, informative, and community-building event! Planning starts in July, with some of the legwork already underway.

We need Publicist/Marketing, Fundraiser Liaison, Volunteer Coordinator, IT/Website Specialist, and a Recycling Coordinator. Please email Fred Yen at fredyen@winchesterfarmersmarket.org for more information.
