Volunteer at the Market
Greetings!

Welcome to the October 17 issue of the Winchester Farmers Market newsletter.

Ed Silivia of E. L. Silvia Farm (one of our regular farmers market vendors) has again generously donated ears of corn, which we will be roasting at the market for everyone to enjoy. This is a treat not to be missed!

The Family Action Network will be one of the groups in the community tent this week. Come by and learn about the exciting programs that FAN has on offer. You can catch up on the details of the Town Wide Halloween Event cosponsored by FAN, Winchester Recreation, and the Chamber of Commerce, and come take a look at the beautiful master site plans developed for the Boggaard Beach area.

Mark your calendars for next week, October 24, when there will be an environmental fair at the market (see details below), and for November 21, when an indoor farmers market will be held with many of your favorite market vendors.

Stop by the market manager's tent to buy a Winchester Farmers Market T-shirt. See below in this newsletter for information about how you can get other great farmers market logo items, including canvas bags, mugs, and framed prints.

You can check the farmers market website for additional information about the market, including vendor profiles, frequently asked questions, and the schedule for artists, entertainers, and community groups. Visit the website for Sustainable Winchester, the sponsor of the farmers market, to get information about current projects, monthly meetings, and volunteer opportunities.

Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday on the common.

Sincerely,
Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

Featured Item of the Week: Celeriac

Celeriac, also known as celery root, is one of the most underappreciated fall vegetables. Don't let its appearance deter you from trying this delicious vegetable! Celeriac is versatile, adding flavor to both hot and cold dishes, and it has a long storage life in a root cellar or refrigerator.

Althought celeriac looks complicated to prepare with its dirty, gnarly surface, you can fairly easily peel off the outer skin with a knife or vegetable peeler, and the interior is smooth and white, with the consistency of a firm potato or turnip. Raw celery root cut into matchstick pieces is the basis of the classic French dish cleri rmoulade and makes a great addition to any cold salad.

Cooked celeriac is delicious in soups, in mashed potatoes or other root vegetables, or roasted, and some of the most flavorful vegetable or chicken stocks contain celeriac. Pick up some celeriac at the market this week and try it in one of the following recipes:
