Announcement from WinCentral
Greetings!

Welcome to the June 20 issue of the Winchester Farmers Market newsletter.

The rain is currently predicted to let up in time for a dry day at the market tomorrow, but remember that the market will take place rain or shine throughout the season.

When you are at the market, stop by the market manager's tent to learn more about Sustainable Winchester's Cool Winchester project, and find out how you can join an Eco Team and reduce your annual carbon footprint in a fun, collaborative, and educational way.

Try to bring your own shopping bags to the market, and please ride your bike or walk to the market if you can. If you drive, park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday on the common.

Sincerely,
Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

* You may be wondering how a farmer can have apples now when it isn't apple season. By picking the best fruit in the fall and keeping it in a carefully controlled storage atmosphere, several apple varieties can last up to 8 or 9 months and taste as fresh as they did in the fall.

Featured Item of the Week: Arugula

Arugula (also known as rocket or rucola) is a versatile green with a peppery flavor that can be used raw in salads or cooked. The flowers of arugula are edible and usually have a milder taste than the greens. Arugula is a nice addition to a mixed greens salad if you find the taste of arugula too peppery on its own.

Arugula tastes great with just a bit of olive oil and salt as a raw salad or sauteed, or try these recipes to pair it with other ingredients (many of which you can find at the market this week):

Volunteer at the Market

Every week on market day, we need volunteers to help with setting up and taking down the market, as well as activities during the market, such as taking surveys.

If you would like to help at the market this week or in the future, click here to sign up for a time slot. You can volunteer for as little as one hour and help support the market.

Announcement from WinCentral

Do you love Winchester, and are you interested in helping Winchester's residents, non-profits, and businesses work together more effectively? Have you always wondered where to find local event information, news, offers, like-minded individuals and groups?

Well, you are not alone. WinCentral is a Winchester-based, self-financing non-profit that focuses on keeping people and money in this community. We will do that by bringing together residents, non-profits, and businesses in new and effective ways, using our rich WinCentral.org website with a Winchester event calendar, local news, discussions, money-saving offers by local businesses, community-building events, and so much more.

WinCentral has been endorsed by these great Winchester non-profits, businesses, and individuals: Sustainable Winchester, Winchester Chamber of Commerce, Jenks Senior Center, Farmers Market Committee, Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence, Winchester Multicultural Network, Council on Aging, Roger Berman (Selectman), Family Action Network, Book Ends, The Computer Cafe, Simms II Jewelers.

During the upcoming summer months, we are looking for volunteers who help us prepare the launch at the end of the summer. There is a broad range of "things" to do, and we think that every individual's talents and abilities can be accommodated. Some examples of areas where we need help are:

- creation of brochures to communicate member benefits
- outreach to other organizations to raise awareness
- outreach to local businesses to raise awareness
- verification of database for local businesses and non-profits
- outreach to local residents to raise awareness
