| Join us for the Winchester Farmers Market
Saturday, 9:30-1:30, on the Town Common |
| Issue 20 |
October 18, 2008 |
|
Greetings!
Welcome to the October 18 issue of the Winchester Farmers Market newsletter.
Only two more weeks remain for the farmers market this year. Be sure you don't miss out on all of the great things planned for the next two weeks. Many of you have been enjoying the delicious roasted corn compliments of E. L. Silvia Farm at the market for the last two weeks. Ed Silivia is generously donating corn again this week. Stop by the Sustainable Winchester tent to enjoy the last roasted corn of the season. Next week (October 25), the farmers market will be sharing the common with Winchester's first Eco Festival (see update below), which promises to be a fun and educational opportunity for all.
The Pie in the Sky program (see details below) will be at the market this week taking orders for holiday pies.
The market will always take place rain or shine throughout the season. Please try to ride your bike or walk to the market if you can, or park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot. Please try to bring your own shopping bags to the market if you can.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday on the common. Sincerely, Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

| Pie in the Sky |
|
The Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Winchester will have a tent at the market this week to promote and take pie orders for the Pie in the Sky program. Pie in the Sky is an annual program of Community Servings, an organization that delivers free meals to individuals and families in the Boston area who are facing life-threatening illnesses. Pie in the Sky takes place every year around Thanksgiving time. Many Boston bakeries participate in baking the pies, and the profits from the sales go towards providing home-delivered meals, including Thanksgiving dinners, to individuals and families in need. The Pie in the Sky progam has come to be known as "The World's Greatest Bake Sale," selling over 10,000 Thanksgiving pies each year and raising 14% of the annual operating budget for Community Servings, and it has been the model for similar programs in other cities.

| Featured Artist of the Week: Ruth Lieberherr |
|
|
Award-winning artist Ruth Lieberherr will be exhibiting her paintings in the Winchester Artists Network tent at the market this week. Influenced by the ideas of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, she explores the character and expressions of different colors. Images emerge from a deeper level of consciousness and find form on canvas or paper. The images invite the viewers to explore and expand their own imagination.
Ruth Lieberherr grew up in Switzerland, where she earned a Ph.D. in German Language and Literature with a minor in Art History at the University of Zurich. She also studied art at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich. Since moving to the U.S. in 1977, she has been exhibiting her work in the U.S., mainly in New England and New Jersey, in Switzerland, and in France. Lieberherr has also illustrated three children's books.
The exhibition Ruth Lieberherr: Paintings will be on display in the Cutter Gallery, Jefferson Cutter House, 1 Whittemore Park, Corner of Mass Ave & Rte 60 in Arlington, Arlington, Mass. from October 22 to November 30, 2008. Learn more about Lieberherr's art work at her website.

Sustainable Winchester, in collaboration with the Family Action Network (FAN), organized the Eco Festival to showcase the concept of "reduce, reuse, and recycle." The primary aim of the Eco Festival is to educate community members about the conservation of our natural resources, innovative alternative-energy technologies, and waste-reduction practices. Through children's activities, dynamic exhibits, workshops, and stimulating speakers, the Winchester Eco Festival will foster public awareness about opportunities for environmental change. It is hoped that the event will inspire community members to make their homes, businesses, and town more ecologically minded and environmentally sound, while also encouraging activism and volunteerism.
If you are interested in volunteering to help on the day of the Eco Festival, please stop by the Sustainable Winchester booth at the farmers market, contact us by e-mail, or sign up online.
