| Join us for the Winchester Farmers Market
Saturday, 9:30-1:30, on the Town Common |
Greetings!
Welcome to the August 23 issue of the Winchester Farmers Market newsletter.
The farmers market will be sharing the common this week with Art in the Park (see details below), which is part of the month-long Art in August celebration sponsored by the Winchester Artists Network and the Downtown Business Association. Art in the Park is scheduled to run until 4 pm, and several of the farmers at the market will be staying until 4 pm also.
In addition to Art in the Park, there is another special reason to visit the farmers market this week. August 17-23 is Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week (see details below).
As we are getting into the later part of the summer and with the bounty of wonderful produce available at the market now, many of you may be starting to think about how you can preserve some of the produce for use during the winter or wondering about other ways to eat locally during the winter. Watch for articles about both of these topics in upcoming issues of this newsletter.
The market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Please try to ride your bike or walk to the market if you can, or park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.
Remember to bring your own shopping bags to the market if you can.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday on the common. Sincerely, Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

| Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week |
|
|
August 17-23 is Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week (national farmers' market week took place earlier this month, August 3-9). In announcing Massachusetts Farmers' Market Week, Governor Deval Patrick said that farmers markets are "essential to the vitality of Massachusetts farms." They "help heighten public awareness of the agricultural diversity of Massachusetts and the benefits of buying local and preserving open space" and "create a festive open-air setting which enhances community spirit and civic pride by offering a natural place for community gathering."
Massachusetts now has more than 160 farmers markets, and that number keeps growing. Because farmers markets have recently become so popular and many communities are starting new farmers markets, the available farmers are much in demand. The Winchester Farmers Market has been especially lucky to find such a great and diverse group of farmers and to have a supportive community whose members shop at the market regularly.

| Art in the Park |
|
|
Throughout August, the Winchester Artists Network and the Downtown Business Association are collaborating to present Art in August, a month-long festival of local art displayed in local business establishments. One of the highlights of Art in August is Art in the Park, which takes place this Saturday (August 23) on the town common, along with the farmers market, from 10 am to 4 pm.
The town common will be filled with art and artists at the 10th annual Art in the Park. Many artists, including painters, sculptors, fiber artists, wood workers, glass artists, jewelers, and photographers, will be present showing, selling, and demonstrating their work. This event has become a singular opportunity to participate in art as a process; whole families may observe, learn, and experiment with art together. There will be opportunities to paint together in the park, to tag walls on the graffiti board (without risk of fines or jail time!), and to add your strands to a town tapestry.
Ingrid Jochimsen will show how she transforms scraps of wood into beautiful boxes, plates, bowls, and fantasy castles.
Nadine Suhrbier will be revealing her secrets of giving a dragon an expressive face.
Terrence Lannon, Winchester's K-12 art director, will guide hands as they make magic on the potter's wheel.
Christa Bennett will demonstrate hand-building of pottery.
Bea Grayson will be leading hands and eyes as they transform ordinary CDs into works of beauty.
Mary Hart will be helping budding artists of all ages transform paper plates into works of art.
Shukong Ou will be folding square sheets of paper into whimsical creatures (real and imagined), boats, hats, soccer balls, and more.
Expect to make a day of it. For more information and a schedule of activities, pick up a yellow Art in August program at any of the businesses displaying the pink, orange, and yellow pennants.
Thank you to Bob Hesse of the Winchester Artists Network for supplying the above information and for all of the photographs here that he took at last year's Art in the Park.
