Issue 7 July 19, 2008
Greetings!

Welcome to the July 19 issue of the Winchester Farmers Market newsletter.

The market will take place rain or shine throughout the season. Please try to ride your bike or walk to the market if you can, or park your car in the Aberjona or Shore Road lot to leave parking spaces surrounding the common open for short-term parking near downtown businesses. The Aberjona lot, which runs along the commuter rail track across from the post office, is free on weekends, including the permit spaces in the end of the lot.

Remember to bring your own shopping bags to the market if you can.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday on the common.

Sincerely,
Winchester Farmers Market Organizing Committee

Featured Item of the Week: Amaranth

AmaranthFlats Mentor Farm is selling both green and red amaranth leaves at the market. Many people are familiar with amaranth seeds in cereals or cooked as a grain, or with the variety called Love Lies Bleeding, which is often used as an ornamnental plant in flower gardens because of its striking red tassels. Amaranth leaves as a vegetable are not as familiar to many people. Amaranth is an important leaf vegetable in many African, Asian, and Caribbean cultures, and it is starting to gain popularity in the U.S., thanks in part to being sold at farmers markets.

Small amaranth leaves are used in salads, and larger leaves are cooked and can be used the same way that spinach is used. The stems appear tough, but they become tender after cooking and have a texture and flavor similar to asparagus. Begin cooking the stems first by steaming, braising, or sauteing, and then add the quick-cooking leaves when the stems have begun to get tender.

Following are some recipes featuring amaranth.

Winchester Artists Network at the Market

During the rest of the market season, the Winchester Artists Network (WAN) will sponsor an artist table at the farmers market. WAN is a local organization that works to integrate art and artists into the local community. Founded 10 years ago, its a free, all volunteer organization with about 85 participating artists who live or work in Winchester. WAN counts art professionals and dedicated amateurs among its membership. Among the activities WAN sponsors are Art in August (a monthlong exhibit of local artists in store windows) and Art in the Park (a day of art and music for all ages).
