Established In 1999 by former National Football League (NFL) players, Tyrone Smith of the San Francisco 49ers, Derrick Harris of the St. Louis Rams and Darnell Walker
of the San Francisco 49ers, the purpose of First and Goal, Inc. is to
provide a unique service in which youth will obtain resources to
enhance academic, social and moral development.

Students from the Boy's and Girl's Club at Budewig Intermediate in Alief ISD at the University of Houston  | The College Experience at the University of Houston
First and Goal, Inc. took students from Budewig Intermediate of Alief ISD on a field trip to
the University of Houston. The students had an opportunity to visit
the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, College of Technology for a presentation and met with students and
staff. The students were exposed to the various aspects of life as a
college student. Our goal was to expose the students to a college so
that they could see and experience what it will take for them to make
it a reality in their own lives. There was also a general tour of the
campus and a stop at the University of Houston Athletic and Alumi
Center.

"I felt very fortunate to have had the chance to meet such an
enthusiastic and optimistic group of students. I appreciated their
willingness to open themselves up to learning what social worker really
do (other than "taking people's kids" as one student stated). Thanks to
Tyrone Smith of First and Goal, Inc. for arranging the visit and to the chaperones that helped
transition the students through the activities. We each had a blast
with the students. Many other GCSW students commented on how cool it
was to see our building full of young people getting interested in what
we love to do every day. I look forward to hosting more groups next
year!"

Let Your Words and Life Have Meaning

Tyrone Smith pictured with students at the PeaceJam Conference  | The 2010 PeaceJam Conference was a great success!!!
Over 200 students and teachers from Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas
spent the weekend with 2003 Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi and learned about
the theme of "Women and Children's Rights" on March 27-28th. They
worked to improve their community in service projects with Catholic Charities
Refugee Services, the MLK
Community Center, Stand
Up for Kids, and SEARCH Homeless Services. They participated in educational
workshops with presenters such as the Center for the Healing of Racism, Houston
Rescue and Restore Coalition, Latin American Women's Project, Houston Area
Women's Center, YMCA of Greater Houston, Rice University, Islamic Spirituality
Center, Iranian Cultural Foundation, Compassionate Communication, First and
Goal, Inc, the Institute for Sustainable Peace, PAIR (Partnership for the
Advancement and Immersion of Refugees), and Houston Slam Poetry.

Tyrone Smith is a positive master speaker, and the life lessons he
shared sent a powerful message. I had the privilege of inviting Mr.
Smith to speak at Fort Bend Independent School District's 1st Annual
High School Diversity Conference. His positive emphasis on academic
achievement, determination, and leadership engaged over 500 high school
conference attendees. His ability to entertain and educate left a
lasting impression on the hearts and minds of all who were present. We
were fortunate to receive his inspiring message, and it will be
remembered for many years to come."
