| Team First and Goal Building Tomorrow's Leaders Today
Team First and Goal had the opportunity to facilitate a leadership conference for 150 students at West Briar middle school in HISD. The L.E.A.D. Student Leadership Conference is designed to build today's youth into
tomorrow's leaders. During the conference students discussed the
characteristics of a leader and their view of themselves as leaders. The students learn the importance of attitude, effective communication, creating
positive change, setting goals, and formulating plans of action to achieve
their goals. They also focus on decision-making, which is one of the
most important leadership skills, as well as learning to cope with and overcome
the results of wrong decisions.

"I had
the opportunity to see the students' outlook and self awareness begin to change
over the day long event. They started the day a bit timid and over the
course of the day, as they learned about and discussed the characteristics and
challenges of being a leader, they began to display some of those characteristics
and take on the challenges. The best part of the entire day was at the very end
when I had one of the students come up and thank me for the opportunity he had
been given. If the program made a difference to even just one person, it
was all worth while."

Tiffany - Journey Beyond Dreams Alum
Tiffany
participated in the First and Goal, Inc. - Journey Beyond Dreams college
experience program last summer at Baylor University. She feels that the program
helped her to see the importance of going to college.
Comment from
Tiffany after the program last summer:
"I plan on majoring in education and I want to become a middle
school math teach as well as a foster mother. I know that I will do well in
college because of the Journey Beyond Dream college experience program.
Journey Beyond Dreams changed my life so much and it put a determination in me
that I didn't used to have and I want to thank First and Goal, Inc. for helping
me."
Today Tiffany is a freshman at Navarro College majoring in Education. ___________________________________________________________

Let Your Words and Life Have Meaning
|
In February Tyrone Smith had the opportunity to speak at Northbrook middle school.

| Mr.
Tyrone Smith came to speak to our 7th grade students and we haven't stopped
talking about it since. The message he brought was simple but
profound. He was able to get the students' attention and keep it for the
entire 35 - 40 minutes. The students listened intently, and wanted to
talk with him afterward. He hit a note with our kids. His childhood
struggle was not that unlike most of our students'. He was able to
identify with a childhood like theirs but he offered no excuses. In fact,
that was part of his message. He was able to demonstrate through his testimony,
how you must not only set goals and dream big and work hard, but you have to
have a back up plan. Life often hands you a detail out of your control,
but how you deal with it is up to you. It can determine the course
of your life. It did for him.
