Musseling in on North Cove Surprise find when chains are pulled up for annual inspection

Earlier this week, when North Cove Marina staff performed their annual check of the submerged chains that hold the docks in place, what they found amazed them. Unlike any other year in memory, the chains were encrusted with thousands of mussels.
"I've never seen anything like it," said Arjen Weehuizen, the harbor master who saw the mussels first. "When the chain came up, we couldn't see it at all. It was totally covered with mussels. Not just one or two, but thousands and thousands. It's like a whole underwater city."
Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh sees the unexpected mussel phenomenon as an indication of the water's growing cleanliness. Mussels and oysters used to be abundant throughout the waters of New York and New Jersey, but overfishing and pollution killed them off by the turn of the 20th century.
Mr. Fortenbaugh is sure that scientists will have an enthusiastic response to the resurgence of mussels in North Cove, but he has other plans for the tasty bivalves. "Maybe we could offer steamed mussels and beer on Friday evenings," he mused.
