2011 Sporting Goods Sales Increase 4%

Bolstered by a 5% increase in athletic and footwear sales, U.S. retail sales of sporting goods (footwear, clothing, and equipment) rose 4% in 2011, according to the NSGA report "The Sporting Goods Market in 2012." For 2011, sporting goods sales reached $55.5 billion and is forecast to rise 3% to $57.0 billion for 2012.
Athletic and sports equipment, which accounted for $27.5 billion in sales, showed a 3.0% increase. The Association is forecasting a 2% increase in equipment sales for 2012.
In 2011, athletic and sport footwear rose to $18.4 billion, which is a 5% increase. The association is forecasting a 3% increase in footwear sales for 2011.
Athletic and sport clothing showed a 3% increase to $9.7 billion. The association is forecasting a 3% increase in clothing sales for 2012.
Among equipment categories with sales of more than $1 billion in 2011, camping showed the greatest percentage increase. Sales of camping equipment rose 6% to $1.8 billion. Hunting & firearms rose 5% to $5.6 billion. In the largest equipment category surveyed by NSGA, exercise equipment rose 2% to $2.1 billion.
Among equipment categories with sales of less than $1 billion in 2011, lacrosse showed a double-digit increase of 26% to $52.0 million. Water sports (kayaks and water skis) rose 5% to $275.1 million.
New to the report this year are sales of protective mouth guards and shoe inserts (orthotics). The total sales of shoe inserts was $353.3 million in 2011 and protective mouth guard's sales equaled $72.9 million.

June CPI for Sporting Goods Continues Down

The CPI for Sporting Goods fell 1.4% in June. This followed a slightly lower decline of 1.1% in May and a 1.1% decline in April. The spread between the two indices was 3.1% in June compared to an average spread of 7.8% between the two indices in 2011.
The CPI for All Items continued slightly positive in June and May with a 1.7% increase in both months. This follows a 2.5% increase in April and a 2.6% increase in March.
For 2011, The CPI for Sporting Goods averaged a 4.7% decrease, following a 3.0% average decrease in 2010. 2011 was the second year in a row that Sporting Goods CPI had shown a decrease. It increased 2.1% in 2009.
In the past five years (2011 versus 2006), the average CPI for Sporting Goods has declined 1.2% in the face of a 3.0% rise in the average CPI for All Items.

Compared to 2011 YTD, Bike Imports Increase as Average Per-Unit Value Decrease

Bicycle imports rose 10% through April 2012 Year-to-Date compared to April 2011 according to U.S. Department of Commerce data. Total units imported through April were 4,970,304, up 449,041 from April 2011.
Imports of kids' bikes were up 23% to 1,422,852, with a value of $44.3 million, through April.
Among adult bikes, imports of mountain and comfort bikes decreased 5% to 1,481,266 units, with a value of $174.7 million.
Imports of 27-inch and 700C bikes increased 13% to 555,892 units for the fourth month of 2012, compared to 490,695 units through April last year.
Average unit value of an imported bicycle fell 8% for 2012, from $98 in 2011 to $91 in 2012.
In 2011, 15.65 million bicycles were imported into the U.S., with a value of $1.40 billion. Unit imports decreased 21.0% but their value increased 23.6%.
In 2010, 19.77 million bicycles were imported into the U.S., with a value of $1.43 billion. Unit imports increased 33.2% but their value decreased 1.7%.

Firearms Indicator Shows Increase in June

Background checks for firearms rose 11.5% in June according to data from the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This comes after a 6.9% increase in May. In June, 1,302,660 background checks were performed compared to 1,168,322 in June 2011.
For 2011, total background checks numbered 16.5 million, up 14.2% from 14.4 million in 2010.
For 2010, total background checks were up 2.7% from 14.0 million in 2009.
FBI background checks are required under federal law for all individuals purchasing firearms from federally licensed retailers and are considered a strong indicator of actual sales by industry experts.
