Greetings!

Welcome to the June issue of V.i. Labs News & Views. There's a lot to cover this month: another example of a customer protecting software IP in emerging markets, a new live webinar on June 17, and new additions to our management team!

Runge Group Chooses CodeArmor to Protect Software IP in Emerging Markets

Australian-based Runge Group has selected CodeArmor® to protect its software solutions from piracy and code theft.

The Runge Group is a leader in the provision of technology and services to the global mining industry. Runge's high-value software applications are increasingly being sold into countries where software intellectual property (IP) laws and enforcement are weak. It wanted to protect the integrity of its licensing system to deter piracy and prevent the theft of its IP contained in the product codebase by protecting it from being decompiled by malicious third parties.

"As we expand into new markets, we want to be proactive and layer software licensing and protection together. We also know that a higher level of protection is needed in conjunction with our licensing investment to prevent piracy," said Runge CTO Scott Henderson. "We chose CodeArmor for its unique support of both native Windows and Microsoft .NET applications, and the ease with which we can automate the protection of our software."

2:00 p.m. EDT / 11:00 a.m. PDTPirate group logo

Jeffrey Bedser, president and COO of Internet Crimes Group, will provide the latest intelligence on the dynamics of software piracy and will describe the details of how an ISV's newly released application is cracked and made available for download at a tenth of its list price or less. You will see examples of how the cracker's "production," "testing," and "distribution channels" mirror those of the ISVs and the resulting economic impact.

In addition to exploring the inner workings of the "piracy world," Victor DeMarines, V.i. Labs' VP, Products, will also discuss:
  • Different anti-piracy tactics used by vendors and organizations to respond to piracy
  • Key criteria for deciding which strategy is best for your organization
  • Capitalizing on "crackers and pirates" for lead generation
  • When technology solutions should be used to slow piracy and lessen its impact

Making Sense of the Recent BSA/IDC 2007 Global Piracy Study

"The BSA and IDC get a lot of heat on the methodology used to arrive at global piracy trends, but I thought I'd comment on some of the results with respect to our own experience and other external references. In particular, two points within the report are worth expanding: piracy rates in emerging markets and the use of technology to slow piracy...."

In The News

Information Security Magazine

Reviewer Steve Weill gave CodeArmor an "A" for effectiveness in the May issue of Information Security magazine.

"Crackers use sophisticated debuggers, disassemblers, virtual machines and other reverse engineering tools to undo software protection mechanisms. The result? Your company's products can become part of the multibillion-dollar software piracy industry, your intellectual property could be stolen, or code compromised.

CodeArmor 2.2 for Microsoft .NET can protect an organization's applications without requiring their modification. Using deep encryption techniques, it will frustrate even highly skilled crackers. It provides stronger protection than standard obfuscation techniques or hardware dongles."
