April 2011
Greetings!
  Blooming Azalea
April may be starting out with showers, but the trend appears to be drying out and making things more condusive to gardening.  We can guarantee we won't have to worry about a drought this year!

This year we are focusing on bringing in several creative solutions for raised beds.  We'll be setting up displays this week; stop by to see how to make gardening easier.

This week Darren's favorite is

Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora' which is an old-fashioned shrub that is gaining new

attention because of its toughness and durability.  This 8 to 10 ft shrub

can grow in damp or even wet soils (or drier soils with minimal summer

watering) in full sun through moderate shade.  The yellow flowers are

produced in April, and most years they throw a second set of flowers in

July/August.  The very bright green stems give interest through the

winter.

The 1st work party for 2011 at the PCS garden was a smashing success! With 7 new families added to last years group it was a great beginning.  I think the best news was watching the kids digging in the soil and getting the first seeds planted.

The next work party is scheduled for Sat. April 16th. We had 5 volunteers help on this party and we want to thank them all. We also have several beds still available.

Joel's News from the Pond
Joel Shonnard

Spring is here which means it is time to prepare your pond, pondless, fountain or any type of water feature you may have, for the upcoming season. Our pond team will be out in force be sure to call in to reserve your spot on their busy spring schedule and save the dirty work for them.

Aquatic plants have already started to arrive, there should be more Marsh Marigold in stock soon, which are in full bloom right now. Spring is a great time to add plants. More plants equal less algae.

We will be having two free classes to focus on preparing your pond for spring and providing helpful advise on how to care for your pond or water feature.

Saturday April 16th @ 11am

Wednesday April 20th @ 11am

We are here to help you garden during April.  We hope to see you soon around the Garden Center.

Sincerely,

The Shonnard Family
