Best Practice Tip

Whether or not an ultrasound facility is equipped with the newest, most ergonomic equipment, sonographers must change the behaviors that have led to pain in the past.  They must become aware of the postures and work activities that produce pain and make the necessary changes.   The following best practice tip illustrates how injury risk can be reduced.

  1. Trunk twist -  This position increases pressure and shear force on the intervertebral discs and can cause back pain and disc injury.

BEST PRACTICE:  Position all exam room equipment and the patient so that you minimize your need to twist to access both the ultrasound system and the patient.  Position your computer monitor, keyboard and mouse so they are directly in front of you.   Whenever possible, instruct patients to self-augment venous return during lower extremity exams.   Endovaginal exam should be performed from the end of the exam table.

I want one of those!

The annual SDMS conference and convention is Oct. 15-17 in Denver CO. As someone who spent 20 years living in Colorado, I can tell you that fall in the Rocky Mountains is a pretty spectacular time of year. I hope you get the opportunity to visit.

Equally spectacular will be the introduction of our new cardiac and vascular exam tables. Joan and Carolyn have been working closely with Oakworks Medical to build tables with sonographer safety as their number one priority. I can confidently say that they have succeeded and you've never seen anything like these tables. In addition to the new tables, we'll also introduce you to something that will make you actually look forward to doing portables.

I think that's all the "teasing" I'll do for now. Come see us at: Booth 319

Well, maybe one more tease, (the last one, I promise) for our vascular friends:

"It's time to get off the floor!"
