Best Practice Tip

Whether or not an ultrasound facility is equipped with the newest, most ergonomic equipment, sonographers must change the behaviors that have led to pain in the past.  They must become aware of the postures and work activities that produce pain and make the necessary changes.   The following best practice tip illustrates how injury risk can be reduced.

Neck twist - improper monitor position and sharing the ultrasound monitor with patients can result in an uncomfortable neck position.  Twisting of the neck can cause lateral shear forces on the intervertebral discs in the cervical spine.

BEST PRACTICE: Position the monitor of the ultrasound system directly in front of you.  New ultrasound systems have articulated monitor arms that allow you to move the monitor into a number of positions.  If you have a more traditional monitor, you can add a second monitor that can be positioned more in line with your line of sight.  If you share the exam with your patients, add a second monitor that can be placed so that the patient can view it.  You will then be able to position your monitor so that it is comfortable for your viewing.

Oh please! Say it isn't so.

Could that wicked calendar be right?  July already?

All the things I was going to do this year and I've done none of them. My trip around the world, that magnificant new car, rearrange my sock draw, and wasen't it me who was assigned to find the new exam tables for the ultrasound department?

Could my lack of forsight explain the the look of condemnation I'm getting as my colleagues leave the exam room in pain?

If only someone would rise up and come to my aid.

Perhaps there might be two women, pioneers in bringing ergonomic principles to the ultrasound field, that could lead me to the perfect exam table for my department. One might even have a British accent.

Oh if only such people existed.

They would stand up and shout - follow us! We know the way, and we'll show you.

And I would follow them and I would definitely Click Here for more details.
