Whether or not an ultrasound facility is equipped with the newest, most ergonomic equipment, sonographers must change the behaviors that have led to pain in the past.  They must become aware of the postures and work activities that produce pain and make the necessary changes.   The following is a best practice tip to reduce your risk for injury.

Arm abduction -  arm abduction at an angle greater than 30 degrees for long periods of time during the work day results in diminished blood flow, muscle fatigue and, ultimately, injury.

BEST PRACTICE:  Adjust the height of the exam table and/or the chair.  If these are not height adjustable, you may have to stand up in order to lower your arm abduction.  Supporting the scanning arm can reduce muscle firing and helps prevent fatigue when arm abduction cannot be avoided.
