Greetings!
I believe that we are now firmly into Autumn my favourite season. Lots to harvest right now except apples, I've six trees but not one apple this year. However my tomatoes and raspberries are doing very well indeed.
The 14th Festival of Light is just over 3 weeks away!We will also have the pleasure of the British Water Ski Racing National Round 8 taking place on the seafront on the day. Saturday 22nd September.
I am working hard on one of my loves making and selling jewellery. I now have a Facebook page and website titled Liz Diamonds Jewellery, details below.
I have included details this month on the Squirrel, Pigeon, Jade and Ivy Leaved Toadflax.

The Red Squirrel
In Norse mythology, the red squirrel Ratatosk is said to live in Yggdrasill, the World Tree. He was a messenger who carried news and gossip between the denizens of the tree. In particular, he ferried insults between Veðrfölnir, the wise eagle who lives at the top of Yggdrasill, and the dragon Níðhöggr, who inhabits its roots in the underworld.
In England from the end of the Ice Age up until medieval times, it was said that a red squirrel could travel across the entire country through the ancient Wildwood without touching the ground once.
Grey squirrels were introduced in England from North America in 1876 and became very popular with the Victorians, particularly the Duke of Bedford who imported a large number for his park at Woburn Abbey. They drove back our native reds, but they can still be found in protected areas. Around here it is quite common to see some red on the local park squirrels.
I was amazed when I visited Mount Rouge in Quebec, Canada where they have the healthiest looking red squirrels with the fluffiest tails I've ever seen. I was even more amazed at how tame they were and would happily sit on your knee if you had any food for them.
I was cycling down the cycle path near my home last week and saw a squirrel dancing down the path towards me and then dodge under the high metal fence which borders the old Clark's factory now being used by Weston College. It was frightened but happily going about its own business. I'm looking at all animals and birds for the messages they give to me. The squirrel seemed to be all about enjoying the moment.

Statins
|
An Oxford professor believes that everyone over the age of 50 should consider taking a cholesterol-lowering statin - especially as it's never been proven the drugs have major side-effects, he claims. Unless you suffer from a rare genetic defect called familial hypercholesterolemia, the advice is poor, and may even be dangerous - and 900 studies that point to the drug's dangers suggest it is.
Sir Rory Collins, at the university's clinical trial service unit, says drug regulators are overstating the dangers of the drug, and are putting people off from taking it as a protection against heart disease. Statins are designed to lower levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol that block arteries.
Apart from a small risk of myopathy, or muscle weakness, there are no other proven side-effects from a statin, he says. Instead, everyone over the age of 50 should consider taking a statin as a just-in-case therapy to protect against heart disease and stroke, he recommends.
Sir Roy's advice is wrong - and could be dangerous. More than 900 studies have discovered a wide range of side-effects, from cataracts, memory loss, anaemia, and even cancer.
As previous WDDTY reports have demonstrated (http://www.wddty.com/the-cholesterol-myth.html), LDL isn't even'bad' cholesterol at all, but has an essential part to play, especially as we age. The only people who will benefit from a statin are those suffering from familial hypercholesterolemia, a rare genetic disorder that prevents the body from stabilising cholesterol levels normally.

The Pigeon
On the same day as I saw the squirrel dancing along the cycle path I also noticed a very large pigeon pecking away at some grass. A pigeon has always meant family and the security of the home. Christopher Columbus's last name was really Colombo which means pigeon in Italian. The pigeon also has an incredible homing sense, the ability to find its way home. My grandfather, kept, bred and raced pigeons and he loved to show me young ones and taught me how to hold them properly. If my father found a racing pigeon in our market garden that was exhausted and hungry he would feed it until it was well enough to go on its way or look at its leg ring and contact the owner. I'm afraid he would also shoot the wild pigeons that were eating his crops and give them to others to cook. I managed to avoid eating them thank goodness. Pigeons are a sign or symbol for a time or need to return to the security of home and to find our way back when we are lost. There may be a need to question our basic foundations or maybe we have forgotten who we are. Pigeons remind us of the possibilities, real and ideal, associated with home and family. Animal Speak by Ted Andrews is a brilliant book of Animal, Bird and Reptile Symbolism.

Those with the asterisk are $3.07 and £1.92 The UK price is governed by the dollar exchange rate so can fluctuate a little. I made the decision to price them very reasonably so they were accessible to all preferring to sell lots for a little rather than at a premium rate. You don't need a Kindle as you can download to your PC and Amazon gives you the software immediately to do this. I was offering all these as eCourses and those who have bought them can still return your coursework to gain your Continued Professional Development (CPD) Point certificates.
